Update On The Kitchen

The mini-reno of our kitchen started a while ago.  I thought it would be fun to share a few of the details even though we are far from finished.  I always enjoy seeing progress pics.  I like them almost as much as the before and afters.  It takes a lot of work and decision making to get things done, so here’s where we’re at right now.

The electrician was here today and added another recessed light.  Where you see the hole there was a metal plate.  There must have been a fixture there before?  Anywho- swiss cheese lighting in a kitchen seems appropriate.  ðŸ˜‰   We’re planning on a black range hood but we haven’t picked out “the one” just yet.  The previous design of the kitchen had a microwave range over the stove; but we pulled the microwave out (sold it on Craig’s list).  We’ve decided that the new microwave will go in this cabinet (see pic below).

We took the doors off and the electrician added an outlet.  We plan to put the microwave here and have some open shelving on the bottom.

I’ve decided to go with this instead of white subway tile.  I like the way the subtle grey tones work with the stainless appliances.

This is what we’ve decided on for the new cabinet hardware (Lowes).

I like the way the black hardware ties in the counter tops.  I’ve decided the distressed cabinet look is a go!  I promise to write a tutorial when I’m done.  I’m working in sections as I have the time.

Last but not least.

It’s Macadamia by Martha Stewart matched to Behr in an eggshell finish.

I’m excited about the changes we’re making, and I’m really enjoying the process.  We’re doing some of the work (like distressing the cabinets) ourselves and hiring out for some of the other projects (like the back splash installation).  We’re using the same contractor who laid our bamboo floors (which was what got the kitchen reno ball rolling in the first place).   I’ve got a few other things up my sleeve for the kitchen that I promise to share very soon!

What do you all think about recessed lighting – likey or no likey?  Am I the only one who thinks of swiss cheese?

  • Kitchen renos excite me – I love the backsplash and that you're tying the ceiling color of the dining room in w/ the kitchen – can't wait to see how that looks. I've got to get my before, "during", and after photos up of our kitchen reno a few years ago – it's so fun to see the changes! Nice work!

  • It looks gorgeous! It's coming along great. I also have recessed lighting in our kitchen, and I love it! It gives the space a warm glow when they're on. I love the backsplash and glass front cabinets on the top!! 🙂

  • I have never thought of recessed lighting anywhere as swiss cheese. I think it looks great and is a must. I have it in my new(ish) kitchen and switch it on when I am not using accent lighting.

  • Very exciting!! We are in the process of a kitchen reno as well…it'll be a slow process though! Where did you get your backsplash? We're currently on the hunt!

  • Oh…. I loved your kitchen as it was! Can't wait to see your update, tho. Especially the distressed cabinets. I'm sure it's going to be gorgeous.

  • Nothing like a little "redo" to get the excitement going! I have recessed lighting in my kitchen also. Mine have the black inserts but I really want to change them out to white, and I think they will be less noticeable that way.

  • Everything looks amazing! We have recessed lighting in our kitchen, it was a must in our opinion. Our neighbor's kitchen which is very similar to ours does not and it always seems so dark! I am so glad we did it.

You crack me up with the Swiss cheese reference. I will never look at our kitch the same way again!

  • LOVE it!! I'm with you on recessed lighting but when I have a big cooking project going on in the kitchen, I like the recessed lights because there are fewer shadows and it's super bright – especially at night. I rarely use them during the day or when we're eating though. Nice to have if you are ripping things up anyway.

  • How did you remove the 4inch granite backsplash? Did you have that done professionally?
    Thanks Cheri
