Try saying that 3 times fast. 😉
Happy Monday! Today is my son’s 8th birthday, so it seems totally appropriate to share this particular project today. I worked really hard to get it finished last week just in time for him to finally have his bed back before his birthday.
I had three problems to solve where the bed was concerned in my son’s room.
1. How could I make the queen size bed (we already had) fit in his somewhat small room and still have room for some kind of bookcase/storage for all of his junk stuff?
This problem was solved by creating/building a queen sized storage day bed and pushing his bed up against the wall. This was a great solution as far as space and storage was concerned, but this led to issue number two.
(This is a before headboard, before curtains, before paint, and before new carpet , but after building the storage platform for the bed picture. )
2. What in the world could I use for a headboard?
3. Since we have no space for nightstands, how can I bring in some reading lamps?
Well, it took me a while to get this all figured out, and then it took me even longer to put my nefarious plan into action. However, I’m so excited (but not in a Jessie Spano Saved By The Bell kinda way) to call this project done-zo! * Please tell me you remember that episode?!
The room has a Star Wars thing going on (as requested by my son), but I thought it needed a little union jack action.
I decided to use pegboard (Lowe’s) to create a headboard, so that I could use these baskets (Home Depot) to hold books as well as these nifty clip-on lamps (Lowe’s).
The baskets were black, but I painted them with stainless steel spray paint. I roughed them up a little with some sandpaper to make them look like old metal baskets. They work as a great alternative to night stands holding just what you need to have bedside – like a storm trooper alarm clock, obviously that’s a must!
Besides loving the functionality the pegboard provides, I also chose to use it because it’s pretty darn cheap inexpensive, it comes in so many different sizes, and it can be painted. I bought three boards for about $35 and some pre-primed wood trim to frame it out for around $15. The paint I already had which means this headboard cost me around $50. Apart from being nice and easy on the pocketbook, it totally answered number 2 and 3 above, and it only took about 10 relatively simple steps to get from point A to point Z!
Here’s a recap/tutorial for anyone that’s interested in creating your own:
If you’ve ever used pegboard for it’s intended purpose then you already know that you’ll want to leave a little space between the screw and the anchor. Basically you don’t want them totally flush with the wall because you want to have space to use the peg hooks/ baskets.
I used this Grandin Road catalog as a guide for painting the union jack. You don’t want to overload your paint brush when you’re painting pegboard. The brush needs to stay pretty dry, so you don’t get globs of paint in the tiny holes.
Do not stress or be overly concerned with perfection. Use the holes in the pegboard as a guide for taping your lines.
The painting took the longest, but it was worthwhile. The end result is so fun, and to quote my son, “It looks really cool!”

***UPDATE – So, apparantly I painted the flag upside down……..oops! You can see from step 5 above I used a catalog as my “guide”. I never would have thought that would steer me wrong, and being that I’m not all that union flag savvy I had no idea this picture was upside down (and was the signal for distress). You learn something new every day, I guess. The best part is I told my son about my major mistake and his response was absolutely priceless. He said, “I think that makes it cooler – I mean you force me to go to bed at 8, so it kinda makes sense.” So, I think we’ll just leave it as is for now – upside down in distress because mom makes me go to bed too early! 😉

Carmel that is AWESOME!!! You did it again girl! Another pin-worthy project – how smart to use a peg board for the baskets! Love, love, love it!
LOL!!! I almost spit my coffee out when I read your "Jessie Spano" comment! No need for me to google that, I totally remember that episode. You are hilarious! And this pegboard headboard is seriously amazing Carmel! I mean, it looks fantastic and just so fun. I love that you mixed up the Star Wars theme by adding in a Union Jack nod and yet it all blends together seamlessly. Well done girlie! 🙂

P.S. Happy Birthday to your sweet boy! Mine is turning 9 next week and I can't even tell you how reassuring it was to see your son also has his shoelaces untied all the time! 🙂

Oh my word…seriously, you're a genius! Could not love this more! And yes…EVERYtime I (or anyone else for that matter!) says "Im so excited" I repeat it (internally, of course) and follow with the "Im…so….scared." Haha.
Brilliant.
Absolutely love this headboard. And the ceiling as well. Nice job! *standing and clapping*

As the mother of a 10 year old boy, I will say that the decorating force was absolutely with you! 🙂

This is so awesome! Love the pegboard headboard! Such a great idea!
um, this is amazing with a capital A!

LOVE how the headboard turned out. Amazing how you can take something as simple as pegboard and paint and make an awesome statement piece out of it.

Oh I love the underbed storage solution!
Completely awesome! Pinned it to my little man's room ideas! Thank you for sharing. And double awesome on a Saved by the Bell reference…!
Pegboard — what a great idea! Your Union Jack design looks great, too.
Saw your piece on Primitive and Proper. So graphic! I've painted a peg board before (craft room) and it was a little challenging due to the holes, but not too bad and made a big difference. Love how you used the clip on lamps! Creative.
I think your son is right, it is really cool!! Love the pegboard idea…so fun! The the Union Jack is very cool and striking! Great job and super tutorial pics! Excited to find you! and follow…
Thanks so much for all of your sweet comments – seriously YOU guys are the ones that rock!
I love your style…another amazing project!
Maggie
This is just such a clever idea, Carmel. I love all the storage cubbies under the bed, & the pegboard headboard is sheer genius! I'm your newest follower.

The headboard is just too clever, and I am guessing, so is your kid! It seems only yesterday that mine was that age, and I really miss the enthusiasm they unselfconsciously display! He appears to be thrilled — what kid wouldn't be? The bed is a wonderful idea — mine loved to read, too.
I am visiting from Savvy Southern Style.
Holy Batman…..that is so darn cool. I bet he loves it…what a great Mama you are 🙂
That is just amazing! Great idea! I am inspired. I have a huge pegboard in the basement – hhhhmmmmm……
I would love if you came by my party to link this up – would love to have you there!

Thanks for the invite Stacey!
Shame you went to all that trouble to paint it – UPSIDE DOWN!!!
The broad white band goes to the top left. 'Upside down' is for a ship in distress.
Great ideas. Starwars fan from way back. My young fella who is 14 is moving into his cave/sleepout which was a garage. Definitely the way to go for inspiration..well done!
Love the headboard
Thank you so much for sharing
Also I love the bed itself with all of the storage do you have instructions or plans for that?
I kind of cheated in the "building" dept. – check this post here for all the details – http://www.ourfifthhouse.com/2011/10/boys-bed.html
Goes to show you what an American, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Japanese girl knows about the British flag – I have enough cultures to keep up with – don't you think? 😉 I used a catalog as my sample – guess I should have done some googling. I told my 8 yr. old that it turns out I painted it upside down and his response was priceless. He said, "I think that makes it cooler – I mean you force me to go to bed at 8, so it kinda makes sense." – Kids always have the best perspective on life!
Great design but yes its upside unfortunately and it happends often even in Britain. I blame the magazine editor you used as reference 🙂
very cool Girl !
hi five from France 🙂
French Joker-
Really nicely done. Unfortunately, your flag is back-to-front. Looks like the picture you used as a guide had been reversed by the publishers (or the rug itself was made incorrectly).
I love this idea! Looks great and I am sure it was much appreciated :o)
Thanks for linking up this week!
Stacey of Embracing Change
Love the headboard! Please also tell me where to get the Star Wars pillow, or did you make that, too?
Sorry but the Union Jack is wrong! (And I'm not even English!)But the idea is great!!
http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/union-jack/union-jack.html#error
This is AWESOME! I am definitely union jack obsessed, and my 11 year old sone has the same clip on light and Stormtrooper alarm clock… hmmm. Suddenly I am feeling very inspired!
*son (not sone, lol)
I love this idea…thinking about using something like this in my small office area – wall art, storage, and light source. As for the upside-down flag, I always thought it was symmetrical – learned something new. But from the perspective of someone sleeping on the bed, the flag look right side up, right?!
Hi and thank you so much for coming over to check out my blog! I couldn't believe it when I came over to your blog and I noticed that you are the "ONE" who made the fabulous pegboard headboard (love the union jack!!!) that I have been seeing all over pinterest. You are a genius and your blog is fabulous.
Stopping over from your mention at ThistlewoodFarms to pin that headboard. Great idea and it can be adapted to other designs too.
~Bliss~
You are a genius. I came over from Thistlewood Farms. I didn't even watch the Olympics…your pegboard flag is way more interesting!!
Eva at Rivercliffcottage.com
amazinggg!!!! smart girl you are!
I do not understand how upside down would look any different…
I love the night time shot of it!
I am trying to figure out how it is upside down…
ok, this is the coolest thing I have seen – honestly. you are so creative. I just love it.
I just found your blog last night. This head board and the room is COOL. I have just girls and everything girlie but wow, this boy room is AMAZING!!! Seeing the tape and the painting hurts my brain. You must have been excited to see the results of it when you peeled off the tape!
The whole room is Amazing! Loved it!
Carmel,
I love this idea! My 13 yr old niece is into everything British now and I wanted to do something cool for her for Christmas this year. I'm a novice quilter, so I thought maybe if I could find a pattern of the British flag I would do a wall quilt, but your idea gave me the idea of painting it onto corkboard for her wall so she can pin pictures or what not to it! Thanks for the inspiration!
I love this room! My son is 9 and loves Star Wars, Legos and plays soccer. I love how you have incorporated everything your son loves in this room. I recently redid my son’s room with dark gray walls and new bedding…I’ve always done his room with red white and blue, even as a newborn! Yay for little boys!
Aside from those mentioned, you can be more creative with the headboard design by using other materials. There are really no rules as to what you should use for the headboard.
This is so cool! Do you know what color blue you used?
It's from Pottery Barn.
Valspar Royal Navy satin finish – here's the link to the ceiling post – http://www.ourfifthhouse.com/2012/01/letting-my-geek-flag-fly.html
I found this post through the Home Depot website and decided to subscribe as soon as I read the Jessie Spano reference! Love the entire room!
Hi,
What color is the navy blue paint?
Hi I LOVE this headboard and just painted two for my boys' room! Can you tell me what kind of anchors you used? I hung some pegboard in our garage, but am not sure it was the best way to do it and want to do it well since it will be hanging over my 2 & 7 yr. old!;)
Thanks,
Amy
I love the texture of the painted pegboard! I see you are also speaking at Haven and wanted to look you up…hope I can meet up with you! Cute blog!
Ok. Mom. Why didn't you paint Star Wars instead of Union Jack when your kid loves Star Wars not Union Jack.
I love it! We're giving my son's room a Star Wars/Doctor Who makeover for his bday next month. I've been trying to figure out how to tie the two together and this is def going to be one of them. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
Please!!!!!!! Its a Union flag, not a Union Jack!!!! The Union Jack is only flown on a boat and whatever this is, it's upside down!!!! Well, not even upside down its a mirror image of my flag! Its all wrong! Imagine how you'd feel, how insulted youd be, if your flag was depicted with the stars in the bottom right hand corner??? Please mention somewhere that this is NOT the flag of anywhere…x
Well said. Ive just written too, about this being all arse about tit and not the Union flag. Its not an anything!!!!!…x
Its not even upside down??? Its a mirror image and it's a Union Flag, not a Union Jack!…x

I'm sorry you didn't see the update at the bottom of the post where I addressed my mistake. There was no ill will involved. I mentioned in step #5 that I copied the image straight out of a popular catalog for home decor products. I never would have imagined that image, which was on a rug they were selling at the time, was incorrect. I guess I should have googled it. Since I was only trying to recreate the look not actually make a perfect flag I just free hand copied the image straight from the catalog. I apologize if you're offended, that was never my intent. You'll be happy to hear after 3 years since this project was completed I'm now repainting.

I am in love with this idea but I would like to do it with a wall decal (possibly of the NY skyline) instead of painting something on. I would still paint it white for the background, though. Anyway, do you know the dimensions so I can order the correct sized decal?
Thank you!
I’ve been trying to figure out how to tie the two together and this is def going to be one of them
