Raised Bed Gardening

Last spring my dad helped me build a raised garden box , and I really enjoyed growing my own herbs and veggies.  It was my first time growing a vegetable garden, and I was pretty surprised at how simple it was. I have a tendency to kill anything green, but by some miracle I managed to keep my garden alive and thriving until winter came.

With warmer temps pretty much here to stay, I decided it was time to clean things up and replant.  I’m trying a few new things this year –  like zucchini, cucumber and spinach.  I was pretty shocked that the oregano and mint came back after the winter and is already in full force!  My hub made a pitcher of mint juleps on derby day using mint from our garden, and I swear they were the best mint juleps I’ve ever tasted!

I found these wooden garden markers at Michael’s  – in the dollar spot.

I sprayed the part that would be above the ground with white outdoor paint and then used a sharpie to label.

I’m excited to watch this little garden grow.

Have you tried growing your own vegetables?  Raised box gardens are pretty easy to maintain.  I mean, c’mon, if I can do it  – anyone can!

Our plants and flowers party is tomorrow!  Have you started planting and sprucing up your outdoor spaces?  Come show them off at our party tomorrow!

  • looks awesome! we actually had a freeze last night- 31 degrees! so we haven't planted our veggies yet., but we built a raised bed this year and are excited to get rolling. we have some herbs by the porch, too, and oregano, thyme, rosemary, and parsley all came back- the oregano and thyme especially! mint is actually a ground cover, so it will take over if you let it, which can be good or bad! 🙂 it frames the garden well as it supposedly keeps deer out.

  • I just built my first raised bed last week! I planted a salsa garden along with some strawberries and zucchini. My Mom always told me to plant my mint in containers-she had one in the ground at her last house that was literally a 4 four round bush! It grows like crazy around here (VA/NC) I love your plant markers, great idea!

  • I LOVE having a vegetable garden! Even when I do nothing else in the yard for a summer, I always have at least a tomato and cucumber plant going! Cucumber is SUPER easy to start from seed, as is spinach! I love going to the garden and grabbing everything to pull together a salad. I have considered raised garden beds in the past and even considered one for my herb garden this year. I put that on hold, though for next year. Do you replace the soil each year? Just curious!!!

  • I have a small vegetable garden, I wish it were raised! But I love your garden label idea. I usually just poke popsicle sticks into the ground but like your idea better.

  • Looks beautiful! Make sure you watch out for the mint, though. It will take over! I moved ours into a pot. Can't wait for summer veggies!

  • your veggie garden is looking good carmel, i err "mom & dad" just started our veggie garden and i'm so thrilled to harvest from it!

ps: those little markers looks cute

  • looks pretty… you might have too much in that box and too close together tho. The tomatoes and zucchini will get big! the metal tomato cages tend to buckle from the weight of the tomatoes when they get to their full size, you might have to lean them out the backside of your box or re-enforce with stakes. Hope your garden produces a good bounty 🙂
