What’s On My Mind This Friday

1.  The painting and staining is done!

“Mom, I thought you said we were going to kick the soccer ball around?”

Our dream has become a reality, and we’re so thrilled.  I’m still on the hunt for the perfect outdoor sectional, but I’ve at least narrowed down the choices   – sort of.

2.  I started something new at the beginning of the school year.  It’s called “Just 3 Things”.

As my kids get older I want them to always feel like they can talk to me about anything.  I also want to know what is going on at school.  A lot happens in day – both in the classroom and on the playground – and I’m that mom that wants to know the details.  My girl, age 7, is always happy to talk and talk and talk about her day.  My boy, age 9, is not so open.  So in an effort to force him to open up and to get her to quiet down long enough for her brother to be able to get a word in, I started the “Just 3 Things” program (? – I don’t really know what to call it?).  Basically each of my kids has to tell me 3 things about their school day.  It can be anything – from, My teacher wore a purple sweater and I really liked it – to, My lunch was so awesome; thanks for putting that piece of chocolate in there!

This has really opened up the lines of communication between us, and I’ve learned a great deal about what goes on at school.  My daughter has learned to be a good listener and wait her turn to share.  My son has become more easy going about sharing stuff about his day with us.

When “Just 3 Things” is over, my daughter can then talk a mile a minute if she wishes.  ðŸ˜‰   But I always get to hear the most important stuff first.

The best part for me is that I get to learn a little bit more about them every day.  I think I’ve said this at every age, but I really think 7 and 9 may be my favorite ages.  Second graders and fourth graders are really cool and super fun!

3. You may want to hit up these skinny cords in the little girls department at Target before they’re gone.   I somehow managed to fit my big bootie in them as they thankfully have a little stretch to them.

I love leopard everything!  They come in leopard, black with white polka dots, green and pink.  They go up to a girls size 16.  I don’t usually fit into pants in the girls department, but like I said these pants are pretty stretchy.  For $16.99 I can force the fit – ha!  My girl thinks it is pretty cool that we have matching pants.  Check them out this weekend, and keep in mind that you can buy them online in case they don’t have them in your size in the store.

4. At this time of year I hoard canned pumpkin.

I love pumpkin everything, so much so that I started a Pinterest board just for Paleo Pumpkin recipes!  If you’re a pumpkin lover feel free to follow along.

5.  Last but not least, do you ever feel like you don’t have time to get a work out in your busy day?  I feel like that a lot, so when I heard about the 7 minute workout app I downloaded it right away.

It’s actually a pretty descent little workout.  I wouldn’t substitute this for a regular workout every day, but on those days when you’re pressed for time this app can help you to get in some exercise.  It’s also got me exercising every day instead of just a few days a week because it’s so easy to bust out a 7 minute workout on what would have been a rest day for me.  Do you have an app like this on your phone?  It’s pretty awesome, and it’s free!

Have a great weekend everybody, and don’t forget the Zink giveaway is open until next Thursday!

See you on Monday!

  • Love that "three things" idea for the kids! Need to try that. We found out our son was first chair in trumpet, but not from him…why does he not tell us these thing for crying out loud?! 😉 Pulling teeth I tell ya! And definitely need me some workout time! thanks for the tip. Lovin your screened porch! Happy weekend!

  • Around the dinner table every night we started a "question & answer" game. Everyone takes a turn to ask a question and then everyone has to answer it. It could be anything from about their day to what their favorite animal is. I finally broke down and just wrote a bunch of questions down on strips of paper. We randomly draw the questions now. It's easier than thinking of one on the spot. http://www.howdoesshe.com/ has some really good ones!

  • I agree about 4th grade boys – Coop is also difficult to get info. out of, but then when he does share something with me, it is so hilariously weird…yesterday he was trying to make his friend laugh at school so he made up a story about Abraham Lincoln chasing them with a hammer, bless his heart he is an interesting child. 🙂

I'm stealing your three things idea. And the 7 minute workout. I think my readers are getting used to me writing, "Well, Carmel said…Carmel recommends…" 😉

  • So much greatness here!! I love the Just 3 Things…I'm totally going to try that! I usually just try to get them to tell me the best and worst part of their day and it goes like this, 'Recess, School.' Well, School being the worst for the 7th grader…my girl loves every bit of all of it. Those jeans…i need immediately…what size did you get? I get girl's tops a lot, but never pants. And the porch…I DIE!!! Happy weekend gorgeous friend!

  • Your "Just 3 Things" idea is brilliant. We have that same problem around our house, the talkers, and the not-so-talkative. And then from the not-so-talkative I hear about incidences or issues weeks later. I will have to try that – thanks for the tip on what works for you! I saw your leopard skinnies on IG…..sososososososo cute with boots!!

  • I love the idea of "Just 3 things!" My son is just in preschool but now when I ask him what happened at school he often says "nothing!" (really, is he 3 or 13???). Since he's really into counting I bet I could get him to tell me three things.

Those pants are awesome! I found a leopard onesie for my 1yo daughter and bought myself a leopard shirt during the same shopping trip and we both wore our new duds this week. 🙂 Have a great weekend!

  • LOVE your outfit! I have some leopard leggings already but have a hard time finding a chambray top that actually looks good. But I love how yours is one solid pieace with only buttons up top. Please share where it is from. I am 'top heavy" so reg button ups usually don't fit unless I get a much bigger size. And then it is just way too big every where else.
