new project – powder bathroom

Hey there friends!   How was your weekend?  We had a nice relaxing weekend with lots of family time, and I managed to start a new house project that has literally been on my to do list since move in day…….which was, oh, uh, about 4 years ago!  I’ve basically known since day one that I wanted to redecorate our powder bathroom.  I didn’t hate the wallpaper, but it just wasn’t really “me”.  It was a bit too formal.

This bathroom doesn’t need a complete overhaul.  It’s already got some great bones  – beautiful crown molding, a pretty pedestal sink and a window!  I love a little bathroom with a window!  Natural light in a bathroom makes me happy.  All this bathroom really needs is a little makeover, so why has it taken me sooooo long to finally get in here and do this thing?!
You remember what happened to that wall don’t you?
Well, to be honest, I could never really decide on a design plan.  I have a Pinterest board filled with lots of ideas, but I just couldn’t decide which direction I wanted to go.  Also, I really hate removing wallpaper!  Oh how I just despise the removal process.  But I finally decided that hey, it’s okay if I’m not exactly sure how I want this space to look.  If I know what I don’t want, well, that’s a start.  So I put my big girl pants on and got busy removing the wallpaper over the weekend!
I shared the above photo on instagram over the weekend and many of you suggested that using a steamer would make the removal process easier.  I’m sure it would have, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around buying one for just this one small space.  I ended up using a combination of hot water and white distilled vinegar.   Then once most of it was off I went back over the leftover pieces with some Dif wallpaper remover.  I still need to do one more wall wash down, and then I’ll be ready to spackle, prime and paint?…….or maybe wallpaper again?……..or add some beadboard?…………or add some picture frame molding?
Still not quite sure what my plan is, but this right here is providing some major inspiration!

I think a bathroom, especially a powder room, is a great place to play with color and pattern!  I love this happy, bright look!  What do you think?  Do you like fun colors and patterns in a powder room?  Could you do a pink and red bathroom?

  • Oh my, look at that wall! I feel your pain! A bathroom is such a great place to experiment with color and I think you should totally go for it! I love your inspiration pic and I'm sure it will look great in your room 🙂 Good Luck with the wallpaper removal!

  • I love the colors and patterns in the inspiration photo…although it sort of reminds me of a Victoria's Secret box 🙂

  • Try using really hot water with fabric softener added in a spray bottle to remove wall paper. We score the paper first then soak with the fabric softener water and let it sit a while. It really removes the paper much easier (if wall paper removal could be easy) and the house smells so fresh and clean from the fabric softener…

  • Thanks for the tip! The paper is all off now but I still need to wash the walls down to make sure all the glue residue is gone before I spackle and prime so maybe I'll grab some softener to do that.

  • Hate tackling wallpaper. Gonna be amazing though. You are a brave girl. My hubby would think I was in need of a trip to the loony bin if I went that bold and bright. LOL Suits your personally girlfriend!!!

  • OOH OHH I do, I do!! But then again, Im sure you could've guessed that!:) Love a bold, fun powder room. Ive had this bathroom pinned for eons. Its one of my favs too:) Cant wait to see what you're up to.

  • Perfect post since last night around nine o'clock my husband dismantled our powder room. The wallpaper he had hung twenty some yrs. ago came off lickety split (amazing.) The vanity and sink were picked up less than an hour ago by our trash service. Now to select a paint color. Hopefully, an all new room by the end of this week. Then off to another small bathroom with a shower.
