Don’t freak out. I didn’t repaint my pink front door. 😉
I did however install a new handleset, or more accurately my brother in law did. He always helps me with at least one home project when he comes to visit! And wow, what a huge impact just changing the door handle made! I’m in serious love! The details always make the biggest difference.
You may remember last fall when I mentioned that the shiny gold finish of our old handleset had started to peel. So after I painted our front door pink I refreshed the door handle with a little rub ‘n buff, which worked like a champ for awhile but was never intended to be a long term solution. Rub ‘n buff works well even in exterior applications, but it will eventually wear away, especially on surfaces that are handled frequently.
If I had been happy with the overall style of our old handleset, I would have been game to just keep refreshing it every few months with rub ‘n buff.
But with the traditional look of the exterior of our home I really wanted a handleset for the door that had modern lines. I just love a mix of modern and traditional, so I chose a Schlage handleset with clean, simple lines in a classic antique brass finish. I’m just slightly obsessed with how pretty this finish looks against the pink!
Replacing a handleset is really pretty straightforward. Honestly, I was glad to have my brother in law’s help of course, but I could have busted this project out on my own with no problem. All you do is remove the old handleset. (You’ll need a phillips screwdriver and possible a flathead or boxcutter to leverage the old set away from the door.)
Then you sand and repaint. The size and shape of the new set versus the old will probably differ so you’ll need to sand really well and then repaint before installing the new set.
Give your paint ample time to dry……..ask me why I’m telling you this. 😉 Once the paint is good and dry you can install your new handleset. The Schlage handleset we installed came with very detailed instructions which made installation a breeze.
In my case the holes lined up pretty well, and I even took the old key hole out and put it into the new set so I wouldn’t have to change keys. This just saved me from having to have new key copies made.
I love the look of the new handleset! It gave the front door a really nice update with hardly any effort at all!
