Girls/Guest Bathroom Makeover

I’m finally done with my girl’s/ our guest bathroom makeover!  You know the one I attempted to complete as part of the One Room Challenge this past spring.  Better late than never I say.  😉

Small Changes – Big Impact

I didn’t really do much in here other than paint and switch out a few things.  But the little things I did like framing out the mirror, changing the faucets and switching out the cabinet hardware really made a huge impact.

I think my favorite part of this makeover is the turquoise vanity.  It’s just so bright and cheery yet really fresh looking against the white walls.  And unlike the previous white that it was the turquoise disguises smudges and dirt so well!

Sorry but it’s hard to take a picture of this bathroom and not be in the shot. 😉

I love the way the diy striped glass bell shades coordinate with the vanity.  That was such an easy, inexpensive way to update this light fixture.  And I’m not sure why it took me so long to get around to framing out this mirror.  The moulding around the mirror is such a nice finishing detail.  It dresses up this bathroom and makes it look a little more custom.

Designing a Shared Space

My goal with this bathroom makeover was to make this space fun for my eleven year old daughter but not overly juvenile since this is the bathroom guests use when they stay with us.  So I used a color palette for this space that coordinates with both her room and the guest bedroom.  Going with white walls and a punch of color on the vanity and bringing in faucets and hardware with a modern bent, then adding a little fun and whimsy in the form of art and accessories created a space that feels youthful but not overly kid-centric.

Janet Hill is one of my favorite artists.  These prints are not only fun for my girl’s bathroom, but they also have a vacation vibe that feels totally appropriate for a Charleston getaway.

The Crocodile Jumper is probably my favorite of the two if I had to pick one.  While we have gators not crocs here in South Carolina, I wouldn’t recommend jumping in any of our ponds.  😉

The Shower Area

I kept this part of the bathroom really simple and clean.  Rather than overwhelming this tight space with color I played off of the black and white accessories in the vanity area.

Seeing as how I know my daughter will never replace the toilet tissue I opted to use a wooden bowl (HomeGoods) rather than a traditional toilet tissue holder. (Is it just my kids?!)

I replaced the builder-basic flushmount light fixture for this nautical look I found on clearance at Restoration Hardware.

Before & After

It’s hard to tell from the before picture but this vanity had seen lots of use and abuse.  If it hadn’t looked so shabby I might not have painted it as I am a big fan of white cabinetry.  But the turquoise is just so fun that I’m glad it needed to be refreshed!  Someday I’d love to replace the tile…..for maybe a black and white patterned tile…..or even just a plain white hexagon mosaic!

before and after bathroom makeover

The shower area doesn’t look much different in this before and after side by side.  But what a difference just the paint color change made in person.  Going from builder beige to a white that has a slightly grey undertone (Sherwin Williams Aesthetic White) made this space feel bright and fresh.

All in all I’m glad to have given this little jack-and-jill bathroom some personality!  It’s a happy, bright and welcoming space now!

  • Love it! What a great space for both your daughter and guests! Classic but still fun. If you don’t mind me asking, what did you use to stick the wood frame to the mirror? Is there a special adhesive for this? And how did you work around those little do-hickies that hold the mirror up and stick out? I’d LOVE to do this around all of our builder-grade mirrors but those little things sticking out have me stumped! Thanks! 🙂

  • I used a miter saw to cut the molding and then adhered the wood pieces to the mirror with liquid nails. Then just used some caulk to fill the corners and seal. I’m thinking I’ll do a tutorial because I’ve had quite a few questions about that part of the makeover project.

  • Our mirrors don’t have those little things on them, so I just used some Liquid Nails to glue the moulding to the mirror. Keep your eye out for a tutorial coming soon. 🙂

  • I clicked on the Zebra bath mat…Target site says it’s not available anymore. 🙁 🙁 Amazon has one: Jonathan Adler Reversible Zebra Bathmat – black for $88…sooo cute…would be worth the $$$. 100% cotton. And Amazon doesn’t miss a sales opportunity…a pop up tells me the credit I have in my account will cover the cost. Tempted.

  • Ooooh – thanks for sharing! I’ll link it in the post for anyone who might be interested in checking it out. I like that it comes in other colors too! You might get lucky and find the Target mat in stores. Sometimes they sell out online but still have a few left in stores.

  • They were from the Kate Spade line at Bed, Bath & Beyond. But they sold out so fast when they put them on clearance. Some stores might still have a little stock of them left.
