One Room Challenge – Teen Boy’s Room – Before & Design Plans

I’ve decided once again to participate in the One Room Challenge!  For those that have no idea what I’m talking about, the One Room Challenge is a 6 week design challenge hosted by Linda at Calling it Home and sponsored by House Beautiful.  In a nutshell, interior designers and participating bloggers completely redesign and transform one room in 6 weeks.  It’s fun and exhausting and absolutely great motivation!  Let’s do this thing!

Those of you who have been around Our Fifth House for awhile might be snickering to yourselves right about now.  Because yes, it’s true that I’ve participated in this design challenge twice before and not completed my spaces within the time frame. Womp-womp.  However, our guest bedroom and my girl’s bathroom did make huge strides forward.  While they may not have crossed the finish line in 6 weeks they did eventually get there, so I’m calling both of those attempts wins!

I have nothing but confidence going in to my 3rd challenge.  Mainly because I do these challenges for fun, but also because I promised my son I’d get his room in order before the end of the year.  And I’m almost out of time!  So this challenge could not have come at a better time.

Teen Boy’s Room – Before

We moved my son into what was our guest bedroom last year.  It’s larger than the room he was in before.  Plus now he doesn’t have to share a bathroom with his little sister.  But while I pulled the new guest bedroom together fairly quickly, I’ve kind of struggled with what to do with my son’s new room.

I’m not going to lie.  There’s a big part of me that feels sad about designing this space.  This is probably the last room I’ll ever design for him before he heads off to college.  And just typing that makes me want to cry buckets of tears.  I fondly remember each of his bedrooms in all the houses we’ve called home since he came into our lives.  His Star Wars inspired bedroom in our Kentucky home is still one of my favorite projects to date.  But I did also love the wood wall I created when he tired of the Star Wars look.

Designing a space for his 13 going on 14 year old self feels a little bittersweet.

This room has loads of potential.  It isn’t bad as is; it’s just lacking in personality.

He inherited the blue velvet sofa that once lived in our living room.  You might recall we replaced it because it’s not the most comfortable sofa, but I didn’t have the heart to get rid of it because I love how it looks!  So he scored big time since his room has the space for one, and I’m planning to create a gallery wall on this wall above.

Design Plan

(sofa, rug, car print, bed, pillow, curtains, nightstand)

The plan is to use as much of what we already have as possible.  Though I am bringing in a new bed because the metal bed frame and headboard he currently has is kind of wobbly.  He’s really into cars just like his dad.  So while the room has no “theme”, I will be bringing in some artwork that represents his likes and interests.  Overall I’m going for a cool masculine vibe that’s doesn’t take itself too seriously.

I’m excited to get started, and I hope you’ll follow along!  Hop on over here to check out all the other bloggers who are participating.

  • That’s exactly why I know this will be the last room he has before leaving home. Once this is done I’m sure he’ll probably not want to change it. While my girl basically begs for a whole new look every 6 months or so. Ha!
