Overcoming Paint Color Paralysis

Ever struggle to choose a paint color? You’re not alone. As an enneagram type 9, I can definitely relate! Decisions are hard. 😉 It’s not because I don’t know what I want. I mean, I rarely have trouble making big design decisions. For example, I knew in an instant as soon as I laid eyes on this gorgeous William Morris wallpaper that it needed to grace the walls of my laundry room. It was love at first sight for sure! But once the paper was up, selecting a coordinating paint color took me a whole week!

I did finally decide on a color, but you’ll have to wait until the big laundry room reveal day in a couple weeks to see what I chose! Sorry to be a tease, but stay tuned! I’m so happy with my choice, and I can’t wait to share! Today I’m sharing a few things that helped me to get over my paint color paralysis and finally make a decision. Maybe these things will help you if/when you’re dealing with paint color paralysis.

  • I always select a paint color last. And that definitely helps me to narrow down my options.
  • Also, I always get samples rather than trying to select a color from a tiny, little paint swatch.

I decided to test two totally different colors: Hitching Post Black and Weatherboard. Both are from Sherwin Williams. The black felt like an obvious choice, whereas the khaki pulled out the smaller accent color.

I liked them both…..for different reasons. The khaki felt very old world to me, and I liked that there was less contrast putting the white washer and dryer against khaki walls.

On the other hand, black felt chic and bold. And I liked that it worked well with both the black and white checkered floor and the black french doors.

  • I painted large swatches of both colors on every wall of the laundry room, so I could get a good feel for how each color might look wrapped around the room.
  • Then I evaluated the colors in morning and evening light, on both sunny and cloudy days, to get a good idea of how natural light would effect each color.
  • I also brought in some of the accessories, like art, to evaluate how each color would play with the overall design. I feel like this is especially important to do with any metal finishes that are going in a space.
  • Last, I took tons of pictures! Sometimes it’s hard to really evaluate a space in its entirety when you’re standing in the middle of it. Your eye can’t take in the whole space, so pictures help so much!

All of those things helped me to make a decision, buy some paint, and get some color on the walls! And I can’t wait to share what I chose! How do you overcome paint color paralysis in your home?
