Screen Porch Design Plan

Last week I shared that my next home decorating project would be our screen porch, and today I’m sharing the design plan with you all! However, considering that I’m starting with a pretty solid foundation, I should really call this is a styling plan.

The major decisions have already been made. A few months after moving into our new home, we decided to invest in teak furniture for our screen porch. Charleston’s salty atmosphere can wreak havoc on outdoor furniture, even in a covered space, so we wanted something that would not only look good but would stand up to the humidity and salty atmosphere.

I sourced this teak furniture locally via Teak and Table and am very happy with the quality and comfortability. But other than that, this outdoor space has felt a little void of personality. And we spend SO much time out here that I feel like now is the perfect time to add some decor and styling to this porch to give it a more “finished” feel.

When decorating an outdoor living space my goal is to focus more on the “living” over the “outdoor”. Basically I try to make outdoor spaces feel as cozy and welcoming as inside spaces.

  1. So first up is a rug. And you all know how much I love a good stripe! But it took me some time to decided between this stripe and this Persian style. But ultimately I decided to go with this striped rug, and I love that it is woven to look like jute but is actually polypropylene. Hoping it looks as good in real life as it does online!
  2. Next, I’ll be hanging my collection of baskets that I’ve been collecting for years……and I might even add a mirror to this little outdoor gallery wall. If your outdoor living space provides an opportunity for wall art, I say go for it! Mirrors, straw hats, baskets, flags, wall planters……there are so many cool things to use for art in an outdoor space.
  3. Originally I was planning to build a console table, but then I discovered this one! The price seems so fair that I’m not sure I could have used the same quality materials to build one for less. I will likely paint the wood base of this table black to break up all of the wood tones and highlight this console’s cool shape.
  4. These outdoor lamps are my favorite, and they are definitely a splurge. But I’ve had my eye on them for over a year now. Plus, I really do believe that lighting makes the biggest impact, maybe even more so in an outdoor space. And I personally prefer lamp light to overhead light in living spaces at night.
  5. Last but not least, I’m going to add a few more pillows to the mix I already have. This stripe pillow looks so similar to the color of the siding. And I love the repetition of this black and white diamond paired with this textured diamond pillow.

I’m also planning to bring in a few fun vintage finds as well! So looking forward to styling this space where we’ve been spending so much time this summer!

*Siding color is State Street Pink & the ceiling is Hurricane Blue (same color as our kitchen island and pantry). Find out more details about our house colors here.
