Summer Screen Porch Refresh

We use our screen porch year round, so while it’s an outdoor space it functions more like another living room.  I’ve been wanting to replace the rocking chairs’ cushions for a while now, but finding replacement cushions can be kind of tough.  Our old cushions weren’t necessarily in bad shape, but I really wanted something that looked a little more custom.  From a design standpoint I wanted this space to flow seamlessly from our living room, so I decided to play up the black and white of the color palette.

Hello Black and White Stripes!

During the Frontgate sale where I snagged some beautiful new bedding essentials for our master bedroom, I also grabbed a set of replacement cushions.  And I’m in major love!  Frontgate offers lots of different sizes as well as a variety of outdoor fabric options.  Even on sale they’re a little price-y, but the quality matches the expense.  And for a covered outdoor area that gets used year round I think the splurge is worthwhile.  I have no doubt these cushions will last for years!

I also added two large matching striped pillows to the sectional to really tie this space together.  As much as I love color, I’m really digging the more neutral vibe.  There’s enough of a pattern mix here to keep things interesting.  And I like that I can easily layer in pops of color via accessories and plants.

This is definitely one of my favorite spaces in our house, especially in the summer!

  • Where did you get the storage cart. It is exactly what I have been looking for to use as a serving table on the patio.

  • The black & white strip looks amazing. I love how it just seemed to upgrade the entire decor. Beautifully done and a great porch. Be sure to send me your tease promo pic asap. I really need it.

  • Did you have other navy accents you replaced when you switched to the black & white stripe? I’m going to have to pull up the March 2017 photos from the blog tour and look side by side 😉 I need a couple pillows to go with my new banana leaf pillows and am having a hard time choosing fabric – ideally I want black and white stripe. But the pillows sit on a navy couch, so that’s out (I cannot put black and navy together – it might work for others but it doesn’t work for me) I love the pineapples!

  • Looks fabulous! Can I ask about the shades? Love em. Where did you get them?

  • They were here when we moved in. The previous owners had them installed. I think there’s a local company that does them because lots of our neighbors have similar shades on their porches.

  • Yes, just a few. The side table that is now gold was a navy blue – spray paint to the rescue. I also had a few throw pillows with some blue in them. Navy and black can be hard to mix, but brighter blues or even softer blues mesh pretty well with black. On a Navy couch – you might try paring a grey and white stripe…..maybe even pink and white for something really fun and poppy!

  • Yes – thanks Kelly. It is from Lowe’s….they have a much larger selection of outdoor merchandise online than in stores.

  • Thanks! I might try grey but I don’t do pink (I don’t like the color on its own, plus my rug is a red based oriental 😉 I might also do a plain burlap or tone on tone beige print…..I really want a stripe but that just might have to wait until I get another couch (or, more likely, use the pillows in a different spot down the road 😉
