Homework Station & Mudroom-in-a-Closet Plans

The next closet on my hit list is this hall closet that is technically an elevator shaft. Which sounds fancy unless you’re familiar with coastal areas and flood zones. Our new home is elevated, so, like many of our neighbors, we included an elevator shaft in our floor plan. However, we don’t intend to install an elevator unless it becomes a necessity, so I have big plans for these little walk-in closets! This one is off the entry foyer, directly across from the door that leads into the house from the garage, and I’m planning to turn it into a homework station/ mudroom.

I’ve been calling it the “study hall” since we moved in last October. This closet is where we store homework supplies and backpacks, and it’s also where the kids charge all of their electronic devices. (I don’t allow them to keep their phones in their rooms overnight.) While both kids have desks in their bedrooms, my son prefers to do most of his schoolwork here because he enjoys this quiet, distraction-free environment. It’s like a homework bunker, according to him. Ha!

But as you can see this space is pretty boring. So considering how much schooling at home they’ll likely be doing this year, I’ve decided to give this little space some decorating love.

Lighting Option 1:

I’m bringing in a more comfortable chair. And I’m swapping out the flushmount light for a pendant to make it feel less like a closet and more like a room. But I can’t decide which of these pendants I like better.

Lighting Option 2:

Which one do you prefer?

I also have a really fun painting project in mind for this little space that I can’t wait to start on this weekend! Be sure to follow along on Instagram for a behind the scenes look at my painting plans!

  • I think because the area is so tiny I would do something funky and interesting as a light fixture.
You know the ones where where there is a horizontal bar and another crosses over it and takes
Your eye to follow it and makes the room look larger and more interesting. The ones you chose are nice but in that small an area they look safe and boring in my opinion ☺️

  • Love it! I can’t entirely place my finger on it because both were great, but option 1 is doing it for me. I think the light feels more funky and playful with the art.

  • I like Pendant 2. It creates the illusion that the space is a bit wider. I also love the bronze shade … simple, sophisticated shape with an unexpected finish. Can’t wait to see the finished space!

  • I think light should be what ever is best for the eyes during various reading tasks: writing, computer screen work, reading books etc.
Also is the light noise generating or silent. In a tight space that could be a huge consideration.
Then which type of pendant allows that best source.

  • I like option 1 because it seems lighter and brighter in a space with no natural light and plays well with the other shiny metals but you will do a marvelous job no matter what you choose!
