Homework Station & Mudroom in a Closet!

It’s done!!! This homework station/ mudroom-in-a-closet was a real labor of love, and I’m so, so happy with the end result!

As a quick reminder, here’s how this little walk-in closet looked before I decided to have some fun with painter’s tape.

Isn’t this DIY striped wall treatment so fun?! I’m always blown away by the power of paint, but in my opinion, it’s pattern that really makes this windowless closet shine! These colorful stripes are just so whimsical!

But as much as I dig the stripes, I kind of feel like the best use of paint award goes to the deep red used on the bottom part of the wall and baseboard. Sherwin Williams Chinese Red is almost an exact match to the desk, and the way it allows the desk to visually disappear into the wall really helps to maximize this small space!

While this is a closet, it’s one that sees a lot of use, especially with our current remote schooling situation. So when I decided to give it a little makeover one of my main goals was to make it feel more like a room than a closet.

Painting the lower portion of the wall red not only helped to visually maximize space, but it also created the illusion of a chair rail which really elevates the style of this closet turned homework office. The whimsical color palette paired with the illusion of a traditional chair rail gives this cloffice (closet + office) a fun yet totally chic vibe!

And can we talk about what a gamechanger it is to have a designated drop zone? These wall hooks totally upped the function in this small space and really made this closet work for our whole family. I envision us keeping the lamp on when entertaining, someday we’ll get to host parties again…..sigh. And when that day finally comes, using this little space as a coat closet for guests is going to be so fun!

You might have also noticed that I replaced the overhead flush-mount with a pendant. Not a necessity at all but definitely a fun detail that really gives this closet the feel of a real room.

This was such a fun project! I thoroughly enjoyed unleashing my creativity here! This modern, traditional mix makes my heart happy, and I love that this space feels equal parts fun and sophisticated.

  • I love this so much—very clever and a great use of space! The stripes would overload my brain if I were trying to concentrate, but I’ve always been highly visually distractible. One thing I’ve learned working with kiddos for thirty three years as a speech language pathologist is that all brains are different! Hugs from Waco ???!

  • Nice work, but the bold colored stripes are not pleasing, especially in a study area. How far is entrance of the house to the mud-study area.?

  • Thanks! Yes, absolutely, we’re all different. My son uses this space the most, and he likes all the color in here. What distracts him is sound which is why being in this small space with the door shut is an ideal spot for him. It’s pretty quiet in here, so he can really focus on what he’s doing.

  • Just because they’re not pleasing to you doesn’t mean they’re not pleasing. We all like different things. How boring would the world of design be if we all liked the same style, color, patterns, etc. WE love these stripes and how fun this space is now and that’s all that matters.
