As I mentioned last week, I’ll be working on some entry foyer styling details (along with making over the hallway that’s right off the foyer) for this round of the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge.

And one decision I’ve been intentionally putting off since we moved in (almost a year and a half ago now) is whether to paint the newel posts on our staircase black or leave them white.
I mean, how gorgeous is this?!
I knew from the very beginning of the building process that I wanted to source vintage brass finials to adorn the newel posts to give our new construction home some old house soul. However, I didn’t envision that sourcing 4 of them would be so difficult. That’s the one major drawback to shopping second hand and specifically looking for salvaged pieces, a great deal of patience is a requirement. SO for almost two years, I’ve been on the hunt for 4 brass finials. And I finally found the finials of my dreams on Etsy via The French Evolution a few weeks ago! They are exactly what I envisioned for the space, and I love them so much!

So now I’m trying to decide if I should leave the newel posts white, paint them black or maybe do something like this and only paint the post caps and the detailing.

Obviously, I’d use black paint instead of stain, like this.

So, what do you all think?

I’ve actually already made up my mind, I think. 😉 And I’ll be back to share what I’ve decided next week! And hopefully, I’ll have a few other fun updates to share as well!
Now be sure to check out my fellow design creatives’ week 2 progress updates! The motivation that this design challenge is providing has been such a welcome distraction. I hope you’re all doing okay, friends!

I think either way would look great! I would start with the caps and trim because you could always go back and paint the entire post if you decide to. If I were to choose, though, I like the lighter feel of just the caps and trim. Love love the finials!
