New Year New Room Refresh Challenge: Black & White Entry Foyer and Hallway

Hello friends! It’s reveal day for the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge! And while our entry foyer and connecting hallways are technically still a work in progress, I’m excited to share a little tour of the small changes I’ve made over the past few weeks. It’s always amazing to me how much of an impact even the smallest of details can have in a space!

After much debate, I finally decided to paint just the details of the newel posts black before adding these gorgeous antique finials, and I’m so in love with how these two little details transformed this staircase.

Such a small change, but I think it made a big impact! The black detailing added some visual weight to the newel posts without making them feel too heavy.

And the antique finials are the cherry on top! From the very beginning of the house building process my main objective was to give this new house an old soul in a way that felt classic but still fresh and relevant. And it may have taken me two years to find the perfect newel post finials for our staircase, but they were definitely worth the wait!

For this hallway at the top of the stairs, my goal is to completely fill the walls, floor to ceiling, with black and white family photos. I’ve had this vision of a huge family gallery wall hallway in my head since we moved in a year and a half ago. But I’ve put this off because finding and printing the photos and then collecting all the necessary frames just felt so daunting.

But I realized, I can start with what I have. There’s no rule that says this wall of family photos can’t grow over time, little by little, as I find the photos I want to print and collect frames.

I’m so glad to have made some progress! It’s just so nice to see some life on these walls. And I’m looking forward to adding more framed family photos to this collection over time!

……I love this peek of the black hallway!

It’s kind of crazy, but the black walls in this hallway make it feel larger to me. And I really love how this hallway still relates to the entry foyer but feels specials all on its own.

The power of paint is so real! Hitching Post Black from the Duron Historic Charleston Collection for Sherwin Williams might be my most favorite black ever! Currently, I’m trying to decide if I want to paint the ceiling in the hallway black as well. I’m having a hard time deciding if painting the ceiling black will make the register disappear or stand out even more. What are your thoughts?

As much as I love that our custom house portraits fit in this space, they do draw the eye up to the ceiling which is one of the reasons I think the register stands out to me so much! But I do love how the long vertical row of artwork packs a visual punch, so I think painting the ceiling could be my answer.

*Update – I did paint the ceiling! See how it turned out here.

All in all, I’m so glad to have started another year participating in this awesome design challenge!

  • Stunning! love all the little details–they make your space.

I would definitely paint the ceiling and be sure the paint the register too. the gaps are already creating negative/black space so painting the rest to match will blend it all in.

    love your work carmel!

  • I Think you should go for it girl! paInt the ceiling and the vent. I painted the white return vent the same navy blue color as my sons wall and i love how That eyesore just disAppeared! ?

  • Once again, you nailed it! Love the black hallway, and wonder if painting the ceiling would make the register stand out more? If you paint the metal, you would still see the filter. the classic touches you added are perfection….love it all!

  • Love your style. I lOve changing up
My space. I do alot. I struggle with trying to find the right rugs for my space. I have thrown many out due to two large dogs. I have an open space home in fl, coastal with some italian elements. My rug in living space is seagrass and jute in open dining room. Need to scrap the jute because of dogs and impossible to clean. Woukd love your ideas. Ty. Terry

  • I’m a big fan of shopping second hand for area rugs. Then I don’t feel so bad if they get ruined. But I’ve heard good things about Ruggable if you’re looking for something new that you can even throw in the washing machine!

  • I have always enjoyed reading your blog, And your new format is pretty! However, and its prob my 40 something year old eyes, but this format is sometimes quite difficult to read. The fonts are light and small., and just Harder to see. This is meant to be positive criticism. Your blog is in my main rotation of blogs, and i want it to stay there!!
