New Living Room Rug

More often than not I’d say it’s best to choose your rug first when you’re designing a space. But in the case of our neutral living room, I chose the rug last because I knew I would end up with a rug that was some variation of black and white or cream and charcoal. And already knowing what the color scheme of the rug would be, I didn’t feel like I needed to make a rug selection right at the start. But rather, I wanted to wait and let the room evolve a bit more before making a selection.

From the day we moved in almost two years ago, I knew we needed a larger rug in this space than the one we brought with us from our last home. But I didn’t want to rush into the purchase of such a large rug. Not only because of the investment but also because an area rug makes a huge impact in a room. So I wanted to be really thoughtful about not only the style but also the durability in a highly trafficked room that two teenagers and two dogs hang out in all the time.

And I’m SOOOO happy I waited because I’m over the moon about this new rug! It has that classic Moroccan style that I absolutely love, but it’s polyester, not wool, which makes it super pet friendly, easy to clean, and unbelievably soft underfoot!

I layered this 9 x 13 over a 12 x 15 jute rug because I’ve always loved the casual, cozy vibe that layered rugs add to a space. And in an open-concept space, I think bringing in layers and texture really goes a long way to making a room feel warm and welcoming.

But as much as I love the texture and softness this new rug brings to the space, it’s the pattern play that makes me the happiest! You can totally mix geometric patterns! Just make sure they’re different scales, and you’re good to go.

Slowly but surely our living room is taking shape.

Slow decorating is my favorite!

  • Not sure why you’re so excited about the rug. It’s a cheap Polyster rug. Looks cheap and more plastic to the landill. Hurray!

  • Hi Molly, It’s my home, so my opinion is the only one that matters. And I really like how it looks in my space.
However, with regard to your mention of landfills, I agree that “fast design” is a complicated issue. The thing is, wool rugs are so much more expensive, and polyester really does help to make design more affordable. An authentic wool Morrocan, for instance, would cost upwards of $3k for this size, whereas I paid $650 for a similar look in polyester. I definitely believe that quality and sustainability are important, no doubt, but sometimes that argument can feel very elitist and condescending. Because that conversation often focuses solely on materials and manufacturing processes, shaming people for their purchases. And it completely disregards consumer buying behavior, which absolutely plays a huge role. The focus is on what was purchased rather than why or the thought process behind the purchase. But when purchases are made thoughtfully, the items we bring home have more staying power and are less likely to end up as landfill.

Anyhow, as I mentioned in the post, durability/liveability with regard to my family and our lifestyle was at the top of my list of considerations. And so, I stand by this rug choice for my home. Just this past week one of my dogs threw up on this rug, and thanks to good ol’ polyester, it cleaned up beautifully!
