Today I’m excited to share the finished outdoor kitchen project that we started working on……last summer!

Before

We had the base built to our specifications and chose to have the sides covered in tabby (oyster shell concrete) to protect the areas most directly exposed to the elements and to further strengthen the base. Once that was done, we had a granite countertop added.

But then…..the project stalled a bit because it took me a little while to make a decision about how I wanted to tackle the front of these exterior wood cabinets.

I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to go with paint or stain, but after a decent amount of deliberation, I eventually landed on paint after falling in love with this taupe-beige color called Embossed Letter from Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® by KILZ®.

I think this really is the perfect neutral color for an outdoor space. It’s both light enough to feel warm and cozy but dark enough to camouflage dirt and pollen. So this color definitely checked all my boxes, and I just love how well it flows with the tabby on the sides as well as the color of the granite countertop. The painted surface also tones down the grain and imperfections in the wood while the semi-gloss finish makes clean-up a breeze and also bounces light back into the space.

DIY Details

This exterior painting project took practically no time at all thanks to fast dry times. Mildew resistance is key here in humid South Carolina, so I started with one light coat of KILZ 3® Premium Interior/Exterior Primer.

In addition to being mildew resistant, that primer also blocks stains and hides imperfections which makes it perfect for an exterior wood project like this one.

Bonus, the dry time is super quick, so it didn’t take long to get to the fun part, adding this beautiful neutral color!

I love bold colors, but in an exterior space, I like letting nature take center stage. This patio area is also underneath our screen porch where it stays shaded throughout the day. So I wanted a light color on these outdoor cabinets to keep the space from feeling too dark and heavy.

I used a 2-inch angled brush to cut in and then rolled. I gave it two light coats of paint, and once it was dry I added rust-resistant gate handles as cabinet hardware. (Missing one that is being shipped to me because the store didn’t have enough in stock.)

I’m so happy with how this outdoor kitchen project turned out! I love this warm, neutral color on the cabinets so much.

I have a few more projects planned for this space before I’ll be ready to officially call it done, and I can’t wait to share more with you! But for now, I’m so happy to have this outdoor kitchen project crossed off my to-do list just in time to kick off summer!
