the best thing we ever got for free

Because this little blog isn’t just about creating a home it’s also about the stories that fill our home…………………….

There was a man standing outside of a Walmart with a box of puppies.

My then boyfriend, who is now my husband, walked up to the man and said, “How much do you want for one of these puppies?”

And the man said, “You can have him for free!”

It’s hard to believe that was 15 years ago.
That scruffy little black puppy he named Jake was our first baby.  He was both mine and my husband’s first dog.  He was sweet and well mannered, and he grew up to be such a great dog!
After his best friend, Prince, passed he was heart broken, but we showered him with love and he lived almost 2 more years.

Pallet Dog Bed
Yesterday he joined his best buddy.  We laid Jake to rest; and while our hearts ache, we are so thankful for the last 15 years.  He was so much more than a pet; he was a beloved member of our family.
Watching my children say goodbye is a memory I’ll never forget.
We will carry Jake’s gentle spirit with us forever.

  • Oh Carmel I am so very, very sorry. Pets become such a part of our lives and we are so grateful for what they give us. We lost two within 6 months and I said no more. That lasted 2 months and then we rescued a pit mix and then in another year we adopted another pit. I finally realized that to honor the dogs we lost we had to adopt again so we could give that love to another animal while never forgetting the ones we lost but helping other dogs to live. One day you will be able to talk and laugh about your lost pets and I hope that day comes soon for you and your family. Patty

  • i have a similar picture of charlie with my kids on the floor and it breaks my heart. i came across it last night actually and started crying. i feel for you, my friend, and am thinking of you and your family. i am glad that jake and prince are reunited in the big field in the sky!

  • Carmel, I can so relate as we lost our beloved Golden Retriever, Tyler a year ago in June…he was just shy of his 13 birthday. He was our girls first pet. We are fortunate to have our two other sweet buddies, however. It is good to know Tyler has some great company up in Heaven!!

  • It's so darn sad…..I can't read a post like this without bawling…..I went through it a year ago and I can still tear up if I start thinking about it:(

  • I am really so sorry, Carmel. Baxter the basset hound crossed the Rainbow Bridge this summer and it is so hard. I am glad that you had so many years with your beloved pup and you gave him a happy home where he was well loved.

  • Sorry about your sweet Jake. We have two "guys" a 3 year old and a 2 year old and I don't even want to think about how painful it will be to say goodbye. Thank God for the sweet memories your family made with Jake & Prince.

  • Your "first born" will always hold a special place in your heart. I feel for you and am already dreading the day that our "first born" Bella joins your sweet Jake and Prince. Sounds like a great dog who was loved dearly for 15 years. He is a happy boy in doggie heaven.

  • So sorry for the loss of your sweet doggie. It will be a rough few days for sure. I know there must be so many sweet funny memories of him to fill your heart 🙂

  • It's so hard to lose a pet, especially one that you have had so long and built your adult life and family with, I am so sorry. I understand completely I lost my kitty in February she was 19 and I had her for 18 of those years I was not ready to let her go.

  • I am sorry for your loss; pets are family and I have lost a puppy after 14 years. Hopefully the hurt doesn't linger too long and the happy memories just remain.

  • Carmel, that photo at the bottom of your kids with Jake kills me — so much said through that photo with no words. These are hard lessons our children learn, but oh so valuable. I am so sorry for your family's loss of Jake. He looked like he had an amazing life with all of you.

  • Carmel and family,
Find comfort in the moments of peace and the memories of love for Jake. What a true gift to have something of this depth and love for you in your lives. He was fortunate to have you there, in his, too.
    With my sympathy.

  • Heart Wrenching, I know. My kids went through it when we lost our dog. My little Gavin had a special bond with our dog, it really hurt him. But how resilient are kids? Thank goodness for that!

  • This story struck a chord as it is identical to ours. I know the feeling and can cry in an instant thinking of our precious, Jewel. I am so sorry for the loss of your fur baby. I know we will meet them again. Love you all.

  • A month ago I was "petless" and may not have understood how quickly an animal could become part of the family….I am now head over heels in love with our new family member. I'm so sorry for your loss but glad you have so many pictures and good memories

  • So sorry for you loss. This breaks my heart and brings tears to my eyes. My husband and I have our first dog together and he is 3.5 right now. We got him when he was 8 weeks old. We don't have kids yet, so he is our baby. I can't imagine the pain you and your family are feeling. Sending love and prayers your way!

  • Oh he was such a good boy, Carmel. There's no question that Jake loved you all thru to the last beat of his heart. I'm so very sorry, friend. "In Heaven, the windows are always rolled down."

    xoxo

  • I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Losing your best friend is hard and is hard to say good bye. To this day I keep thinking about the dogs that had been part of my life. It's so hard to let go. Dogs are such great companions, they love you no matter what, no judgement, just innocent love.

  • Carmel (and family) I'm so so so sorry for your loss:( What a sad day for your family. I hope the rest of the week and the weekend brought some happy times for you all. I'm thinking of you!

  • I am sorry for your loss. We had to say goodbye to two of our furry friends last year. It was heartbreaking. Thankfully we were able to welcome a new friend last February, Banjo. He makes my heart happy.
