Remember back in June when I started the powder bathroom makeover? I’ve been taking her slow……..real slow……..snail’s pace slow………..but today I’m happy to be calling her done! I was going for girly in this little space. I wanted a little sweetness with a dose of the unexpected. I wanted to make this powder room feel a bit more like a dressing room, and I really wanted to infuse some life and personality into an otherwise boring, basic but functional space. The end result may not be for everyone, but that’s perfectly okay with me. If you can’t follow your design whims in your own home what’s the point?
I knew I wanted lots of art in this space. I wanted to draw the eye away from the commode. Yes, I realize it’s a bathroom, but the commode doesn’t need to be the main attraction does it? I feel like the art sort of disguises the porcelain throne. While leaning art in a powder bathroom may be a bit unconventional there’s enough distance there for it to be a non-issue in our home, and I love the way it makes this space feel more lived in rather than staged. I think design decisions like this are the ones you have to just go with your gut on and hold your ground. It’s okay to fly your design freak flag in your own home……..you’re the one paying the mortgage……….do what makes you happy!
I’m a big time fan of mixing things up, and I just love a good vintage modern mix. I found this mirror at a local vintage shop – Street Scene. I added a touch of white paint to bring out the beautiful carved details. The sconce was another local find – Breckers Lighting. I fell in love with its modern take on traditional. The square shape and stainless finish give it an industrial vibe, but the shades and crystals give it a pretty classic feel. The combination of the mirror and sconce over the pedestal sink makes me all kinds of happy. Especially because as my friends and family can attest, I lived with no mirror and a big whole where the sconce would go for many months. Sometimes you have to live with unfinished and ugly until you find the perfect pieces – ya know?
And last but not least, this Diana Vreeland quote perfectly sums up my thoughts on design and just seemed so perfect for this space. Life is just too short for your home or your person to be basic.
Here’s a list of sources for anyone interested:
– Black and White Hilda Glasgow Sketches (from a Coloring Book at Street Scene) or found online here – great bang for the buck on these beauties!
– Large Leaning Floral Art – DIY – I’ll share the deets soon
I love Street Scene! My last buy there was vintage Christmas ornaments 🙂
that quote is awesome and i LOVE the pink and red and slightly boho vibe!
It's a fav spot to shop for sure!
Thanks girl!
"It's okay to fly your design freak flag in your own home" – I LOVE this! Every once in awhile I do something in my house that I'm sure everyone else will absolutely hate, but I just go with it anyway. As long as my husband doesn't complain (too much) I call it good. I think the bathroom is cute, and I love the mirror!!!
Love the Hilda Glasgow sketches–very elegant and interesting
So fun Carmel! I love the mix of red and pink- it all looks so old but in a fresh cool way!
Thanks so much Beth!
You're gonna kill me, but daaang that's a nice toilet. LOL Seriously, I really like it. But I love the art. I'm slowly making a black and white gallery wall in our master bath and I LOVE it.
Wow…when I first heard about red and pink I didn't know if it would work, but you made it look fabulous!! Nicely done! Stephanie- loveolympiajune
