When FrogTape® asked me to join their 2017 Paintover Challenge, I knew exactly what room I wanted to makeover.  You may recall that I’ve been wanting to makeover my laundry room, that doubles as a mudroom, ever since we got our new washer and dryer.  This is a space I spend lots of time in (since I do 85% of the laundry around here), and I would love for it to have some personality!  I think a laundry room is the perfect canvas for some design fun!  Though I’ve struggled with indecision in terms of whether to paint the cabinets or to paint the walls a happy color.  The paintover challenge has motivated me to dive in, make up my mind and get ‘er done!
The Design Plan & Challenge Details
There are five other diy design bloggers participating in the Paintover Challenge, and each of us was given a specific design trend to use as inspiration for our makeover projects.
I’ve been assigned “Timeless Touches” which works perfectly with my personal design aesthetic.  I’m a huge fan of interiors that have a traditional, classic and totally timeless base.  I’ll be using classic patterns and paint colors to play up the traditional feel of the moulding and cabinetry while layering in some fun and whimsy via art and accessories.
Black, White & Grey……..with a pop of Pink
(striped pillow, pink pillow, tile, hooks, knobs -Hobby Lobby, basket, art print)
Inspiration for the design plan began with this whimsical print from one of my favorite artists, Janet Hill.  I mean this is exactly how I feel when it’s laundry time.  Who wouldn’t rather float away holding on to a bundle of balloons than fold clothes?
Since this is a window-less space that sees daily traffic from my family I’m going with white walls and light grey cabinets and moulding.  Deciding to go grey on the cabinetry and moulding has as much to do with function as form.  I know grey cabinets and moulding paired with this black and white 20’s-inspired tile on the floors will look classic. However grey will also hide the never ending scuffs and dirt that seem to collect in this heavily-abused-used space.  It’s hard to see in the before pictures up above, but believe me when I say the mudroom built-in never looks that white in real life.  I’m hoping a light grey will not only bring in a timeless look but will also serve as camouflage for the everyday wear and tear.
I also have plans to bring in a fun pop of pink. Â So literally every surface in this room will be getting a fresh coat of paint!
Makeover Budget
Frogtape® is generously offering each blogger $1000 and a box of painters tape to get this makeover done!  My laundry/mudroom is fairly small square-footage wise and the few accessories I plan to use are ones I’ve had (recycled from our previous home).  So I’m excited to use the bulk of the budget on a new tile floor!
I’ve never been a fan of the builder-grade beige tile floor in our laundry/ mudroom.  It’s not ugly or offensive.  But it is kind of boring, and it’s really tough to keep it looking clean.  A small space, especially one that is closed off from the main living areas of the house, is the perfect place to play with design and have some fun!  A black-and-white patterned tile floor not only brings in a custom, classic look, but it will hide dirt so much better!
So stay tuned! Â Next week I’ll be back to share an update on the progress!
