ORC – Week 5 – Turquoise Bathroom Vanity

The turquoise bathroom vanity came out better than I expected, but first let’s chat about how I’m completely in over my head!

Only I, being the completely crazy woman that I am, would attempt to cram a spring break trip to Italy, the FrogTape Paintover Challenge, in which I’m making over our laundry/ mudroom, and the One Room Challenge, in which I’m making over my girl’s bathroom that she shares with our guests, into 6 weeks!  Seriously!  What was I thinking?!  I’ve clearly lost my ever-loving mind.

That being said, I wouldn’t have it any other way!  There is something almost magical about taking on a challenge.  At least for me.  I tend to procrastinate and put off making design decisions in my home.  But a design challenge helps me to focus and motivates me to get to work.  So while it’s a very real possibility that I might not be completely done with the bathroom makeover by this time next week, I’m thrilled to have made so much progress!  And I know without a shadow of a doubt if I hadn’t taken on the One Room Challenge this bathroom would not be getting any design love whatsoever.  So here’s to progress…….

Amy Howard at Home – Vintage Affliction

I underestimated the amount of time painting the vanity would take.  While I was able to skip over the priming and sanding in preparation step, thanks to the amazing Amy Howard at Home’s One Step Paint, it did still take a good three coats of paint.  Then I gave it a light sanding with a fine grit sanding block before applying a polyurethane top coat in a satin finish.

But all the time and effort was worth it!  Vintage Affliction is such a great color!  It makes this bathroom feel so fresh and happy. And my girl is over the moon with the results, which makes my momma heart even happier.  I especially love this color paired with the new polished nickel hardware (from Lowe’s).  I changed the knobs on the doors to handles for a little modern meets classic, vintage vibe.

Quick Lighting DIY

If you follow me over on Instagram you may have seen this quick little diy over in my instastories.  As you might remember I was waffling back and forth on the lighting for this bathroom.  Not being super crazy about this standard bathroom light, I was considering changing it for something else.

Thanks to all of you who weighed in with your thoughts on my lighting dilemma, I decided to keep this fixture and just change out the shades for something a bit more reminiscent of the vintage schoolhouse look.  I did something really similar in our powder bath, so I knew I could replicate the style pretty easily with some painters tape and paint.  This time instead of spray paint I used nail polish that complimented the color of the vanity.  Three coats of polish did the trick.  They have an imperfect, hand-painted look which gives them character I think.

At $32 for the four glass replacement shades at Lowe’s it was an inexpensive way to bring in a more custom look.  Now this fixture doesn’t scream builder grade.  And this decision left money in the budget for other accessories!

Left to Do

I still have tons left to do………. And we have such a busy weekend ahead.  I’m going to do my best…….but there’s a real possibility that I won’t be done by next Thursday.  Fingers crossed!  Who needs sleep right?!  😉

  • Paint the Walls – SW Aesthetic White
  • Switch out the Faucets
  • Frame out the Mirror
  • Hang Hooks and Towel Bar
  • Change out the Flushmount in Shower Area
  • Make and Install a Window Valence
  • Hang Art and Style

The space is not that big, so I’m hoping to get the walls painted before Saturday morning!  Wish me luck!

Be sure to check in with the other One Room Challenge participants to see the progress they’ve made!

  • The color on that vanity is beautiful! And great job on the lights. I have one almost identical and this idea will save me a few pennies. Thanks for sharing!

  • The vanity looks great! And I love your lighting solution, so smart. Good luck with your weekend to-do list!

  • Love your paint color! Looks happy and fresh. Quick question: can you really use ploy over chalk paint? I stopped using chalk paint because I could never make the wax look “right”.

  • I do it all the time. I prefer it to wax because I’m not great at working with wax. I also feel like poly creates a harder seal that is much easier to wipe, which is great in a space like a bathroom where there will be lots of use/abuse. 😉
