Let’s Chat – Audiobooks, Podcasts & Binge-Watching

Between the FrogTape Paintover Challenge and the One Room Challenge I’ve been in a pretty steady diy project flow for the past month or so. Except for our spring break trip to Italy, I’ve had a paint brush or roller in my hand just about every other day.  Besides gallons of iced coffee, what keeps me chugging along on the diy train is listening to podcasts and dare I say, audiobooks.

During these heavy diy times I also find that binge-watching is my favorite form of relaxation at the end of a day.  Reading actual words in a book just feels too daunting a task when you’ve been in paint clothes for most of the day and somehow managed to have the energy and brain power to assist your ten year old with multiplying and dividing fractions.  Oh 5th grade math, you are so unfriendly.

Today I thought it would be fun to chat about what I’ve been listening to and watching.  And I’d absolutely love for you all to share what’s been on your radar lately!  As we head into the summer months and network television comes to a grinding stop, it’s always good to have some good entertainment recommendations!

behind closed doors

AudioBooks

I have to admit, I’ve always been an audio snob.  Listening to books…….well, I’ve always been of the mindset that it doesn’t count as “reading”.  But in the last few months I’ve changed my mind a bit.  I’m still a staunch lover of reading the written word as God and every good author intended.  😉  However, what can be wrong with listening while you get your projects and chores done?  My TBR list is ever-growing as is my pile of work to-do’s, mom responsibilities and household chores so audio has been a nice way to power through daily tasks.

I guess I’m a slow convert.  Though I will say that the voice of the reader is crucial.  I think the wrong reader can totally destroy a story.  Though on the contrary a good reader can make a dull or slow to start book really come to life.

Recently I finished listening to Behind Closed Doors.  I think if I had been reading I would have stopped about halfway through because the story was a bit unbelievable for me.  It’s a psychological thriller touted as being a great one for any who loved The Girl on the Train, and as a bona fide psycho-thriller-lover I was excited to check out this debut.  But there were many holes in the story that just didn’t add up for me.  Though I am glad I listened to the end, I wonder if I would have liked it more had I read it rather than listened to the story.  Comparatively speaking, this one didn’t grab me the way The Girl on the Train or any of Gillian Flynn’s books did.  As a stand alone I found it more chilling than thrilling.

Podcasts

I’ve never been a talk radio fan, so traditional podcasts don’t really do it for me.  I occasionally listen to the Young House Love podcast, but I prefer podcasts that are more of a series than stand alone episodes.

I was a huge fan of Serial, so I jumped in to S-Town almost as soon as it was released.

S-Town Podcast

It left me feeling so many emotions.  It’s one of those podcasts you absolutely have to discuss once you’re finished as a way of getting some kind of closure.  I’m not sure how I feel about it to be honest.  In a way it felt exploitive and there was a point in the series where I thought they should have ended rather than continuing.  Sad and hopeless, though it did make me realize how much of our life’s happiness is dependent not on our circumstance but on our choices.   Have you listened to S-Town?  What were your thoughts?

Any other podcasts you’d recommend?  I’ve heard Missing Richard Simmons is great, but I’ve been hesitant to dive in to listening to something that sounds almost akin to a modern day witch hunt of sorts.  Regardless of celebrity, an individual should still have the right to privacy, no?

Binge-Watching

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl began back in the fall of 2007.  At that time I was a young mother with two kids under 3, so a show about teenage socialites in Manhattan wasn’t exactly on my radar.  😉  Back then I was busy watching Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and The Office……shows about teenagers……I didn’t have the time to invest.  And if it was going to grab my attention back then it would have had to have some vampires in it to make me want to watch.  😉  I was a die-hard The Vampire Diaries fan from it’s inception in 2009.  But I digress…….

Gossip Girl

After binge-watching Parenthood…..a show I have no earthly idea how I missed while it was on network television…..I was looking for something fun and light.  A friend recommended Gossip Girl.  So I decided to give it a whirl.

My synopsis?  It’s kind of like Kelly and Brenda’s 90210 but set in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, with better clothes, better dialogue, a great soundtrack and some fun Audrey Hepburn movie references.  There’s lots of scheming and girl drama coupled with romances that could only exist in a perfect television screen world.  I loved it!  It’s a really fun series.

The Carrie Diaries

I must be in a New York state of mind because I’m now starting to get into The Carrie Diaries.

The Carrie Diaries

It’s basically the prequel to Sex and The City, as it goes back to 1984 and a teenage Carrie Bradshaw.  After just 2 seasons and 26 episodes it fizzled in 2014.  I never even knew it existed until a few weeks ago when it showed up under recommended if you loved Gossip Girl on Netflix.  Sometimes the shows that aren’t huge successes end up being really great, so I plan to watch every episode.  Have you seen it?  Any good?

The White Queen

I’m also watching The White Queen with the hubs.

The White Queen

I’ve been a Philippa Gregory fan for years, so I’ve been wanting to watch this for awhile.  We’re on episode 5 and are both really liking it.  We plan to watch the The White Princess next.   Obviously a stark contrast to Gossip Girl and The Carrie Diaries but all’s fair in love and entertainment right?

So what’s on your radar?  What are you listening to or watching and loving these days?  Do tell in the comments section down below!

  • I’m probably the last person that should respond to this post, but I will. LOL I used to love reading but I’m lucky any more if I read 10 books a year. Not sure what happened. I am not currently reading anything, but I do want to read that a southern blogger wrote – see I can’t even remember the name! I don’t listen to podcasts and I’m not one for listening to a book. I can really appreciate peace and quiet. But, in your situation I would probably put on some good old R&R to listen to.

I don’t binge watch anything. I’m not big on tv or movies – geeze I sound so boring! I’m just not into those things. This time of year, to wind down we prefer to get outside. Light a fire, talk, not talk, enjoy the surroundings and the time together (with the pup of course). I do still like Grey’s Anatomy and will sometimes watch that. We cut the cable cord long ago and don’t even have netflix now!! I should say that it’s easier for us to get away with that as we don’t have children.

  • Netflix has some really good series that I couldn’t get enough of. Some of my favorites: Versailles, The Killing, and
The Last Kingdom. If you have amazon prime Mad Dogs, Catastrophe, and Fleabag, are favorites of mine.

  • I binge-watched DowntonAbbey, Outlanders, Poldark, and Mr. Selfridge over the last six months. I’m now reading the Poldark series since it doesn’t air again until June. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. I have already read the Outlander series so I’m patiently waiting on the series to air again this fall- okay so not patiently waiting. And seriously, could Diana Gabaldon finish the next book? A few years ago, my husband and I had our first binge-watching session when we went through all the series of “24.” It took about six months but we were both hooked. I have never really listened to podcasts; I just can’t seem to get into them. As far as audiobooks, I agree that the reader has to be great for me to get into it. We have done audiobooks on road trips with the kids- things like The Swiss Family Robinson, The Cat of Bubastees, etc. on Libravox. One of our kids annoys the others by reciting the opening at random times- “This is a Libravox recording. All Libravox recordings are in the public domain…” Needless to say, it goes on for a bit and is very irritating about the tenth time through on a long road trip! We have listened to a lot of classic literature that way and it is a lot easier to follow than reading it. Good luck with wrapping up all your projects!

  • Love your posts! I watched The White Queen a couple of years ago & was entranced. Am now into The White Princess & loving it. PBS & Starz are teaching me history, although expanded liberally. More. More. More.

  • Just finished binging MadMen. LOVED it.
I’ve also recently binged on Breaking Bad, Grace and Frankie, Stranger Things and Parenthood.
I also watched the mini series 11/22/63 which I read first and really liked.
I’ve never listened to a book but the multitasking aspect of it does appeal to me. So that maybe something in my future!

  • Love love love Gossip Girl!! One of my all time favorite shows. I always go back to it when I’m at a loss for something to watch. I’ve binged it at least 5 times. Same with Greys Anatomy. They got me through those early weeks of having a newborn.
I also watched Vampire Diaries. I tried getting into the spinoff The Originals but there was no Damon so it couldn’t hold my attention. I do love Jane the Virgin (comedy/drama), Reign (historical fiction/drama) and The 100 (dystopian). They are all still on air but the first few seasons are on Netflix. Also… Pretty Little Liars is really good.

  • My husband and I are currently halfway through Serial and trying to find time to listen together! We also love Gossip Girl. Try Friday Night Lights if you’ve never watched. Even if you’re not a football fan, you’ll love it! I can’t wait to get into The White Queen. I stumbled across it recently, and hope I can find it with our weird unconventional TV setup!

  • The Royals on Netflix is a good binge watch as is Sherlock Holmes. Mike Rowe has an awesome podcast that is short, mebbe 15min, and it is very much like the old Paul Harvey radio stories (and now you know the rest of the story). There are quite a few now so it will take some time to listen to all of them. And they’re not related to each other so you can listen in any order you choose.

  • I recently finished watching Big Little Lies. I also read the book & really enjoyed both!
Now I’m watching & totally obsessed with The Affair!
I totally get what you mean about audio books! I still won’t convert.
I’ve been listening to the podcast How I Built This. It’s fascinating to hear how people got their start! Names like Kendra Scott, Kate Spade, Crate & Barrel…

  • Oh how I love everything you wrote about today. I am an avid audiobook listener, though. I have even been known to listen to them in the mornings when I’m putting on my makeup if it’s good enough. But you are spot on about the reader. I love Mary Kay Andrews, but the audiobooks I’ve gotten are read by someone with such a strong (and fake) southern accent that I’m turned off. I’ll stick to her written word. 😉
I’m currently obsessed with the Young House Love podcast but haven’t gotten into the other types. I’m interested in the S-Town one you mentioned. I’m from Alabama, so maybe it’ll be interesting.
I so loved The Carrie Diaries while it was on and was very disappointed when it didn’t continue. I, like a lot of women, am a huge fan of Sex and the City, so I jumped right on that train. Hope you enjoy it! It was good fun.

  • I agree with you on The Last Kingdom and my other favorite that I would totally recommend is Outlander. Recently I found myself in bed with a foul virus for a whole weekend. My husband and my doctor gave me strict instructions to rest and stay hydrated for the next few days (a rare treat). So I spent three glorious days in my pajamas on the couch drinking lemon tea and honey and binge watching two whole series of The Last Kingdom. It is a brilliant series I couldn’t get enough of it (obviously) the characters are beautifully crafted and portrayed and the story intriguing. The absolute best remedy for a quick recovery! Sadly, I am now fully recovered and back at work and I have to wait until 2018 for the next series to be available. Next on my list is Vikings and I am probably the last person the jump on board the cult following of Game of Thrones but when time permits I will start at the beginning of that one too.

  • I go through phases or reading dry spells……then I pick it up again. It just all depends on what I have going on. Being a book club keeps me tuned in to reading though and I really like that about it!

  • Hubs and I LOVED The Killing….it was hard to go to sleep after watching that though….super intense. I watched the first season of Outlander and loved it. I only ever read the first book, so I was afraid to watch season 2 because I don’t want to ruin the story that I loved so much……kind of scared to find out what the author has in store for the characters I loved so much…..maybe I should read on and then watch.

  • Oh Downton…..such a great one, loved it! I’ll have to check into Poldark and Mr. Selfridge. Thanks for the rec!

  • We don’t get Starz so I’ll have to wait on the The White Princess. We just finished The White Queen this week. It ended too soon!

  • MadMen was a favorite of mine. I should go back and rewatch…..the fashion and interiors were so good! My hub watched Stranger Things, and he keeps telling me I need to see it. We tried Breaking Bad but I just couldn’t get into it. LOVED Parenthood!! And I’ve had lots of people tell me that they love Grace & Frankie. I’ll have to check it out!

I didn’t realize 11/22/63 was a book. We started watching but haven’t kept up with it. We need to get back into it.

  • I couldn’t get into the spinoff either. I was just never a Claus fan so it didn’t have much appeal for me. There really hasn’t been a good show spinoff since Angel. Clearly I have a thing for vampires. 😉

  • Thanks for the tip on Friday Night Lights…..I’m not a football fan so I’ve always steered clear, but I’ll check it out! You will LOVE The White Queen.

  • Thanks for the recs! Sherlock Holmes would probably be one the hubs would be in to. I’ll check out Paul Harvey. It’s always nice to have something to pass the time while folding laundry. 🙂

  • There is nothing worse than a fake southern accent. UGH! S-Town was really heavy- almost like a sad audio portrait – but really good. If that makes any sense at all. It was definitely interesting and worth listening to.

I’m almost done with season 1 of the The Carrie Diaries and I already know I’m going to be so sad to see it end. It is such a fun show! I am loving the music, the fashion, the interiors…….it’s almost like a video yearbook and so fun to revisit a time I grew up in! This show was clearly not marketed well, because it should have lasted at least 4 more seasons……it should have ended when she graduated from college!

  • I do like stand alone podcasts in general, but there is one that I like which is a super long series – Britsh History Podcast. He tells history in an honest, story telling way. It is very detailed and is only around the year 900 AD, so there is plenty more to come!

Also, if you like history and teen dramas, check out Reign, an historical fiction show on the CW. It is based on Mary, Queen of Scots. It has been on for 2 or 3 seasons and is still on!

  • The hubs and I are currently bindge watching Blue Bloods. Not one I would have picked myself but it was his turn. And I LOVE it. I love trying to solve the police crimes. I think I know want to be a detective.:) Think I will start Gossip Girls next-but sure he wont watch that with me.
