I rearranged the furniture in my living room, swapping the sofa with the chairs. And I like this arrangement so much more! But one change always leads to another, and now I want to bring in a sofa console table.

Truth be told, bringing in a console table was actually my motivation for changing the furniture layout in the first place. I want to add a console table with two large lamps to the back of the sofa to create a little visual separation between the kitchen and the living room in my open concept floor plan.
With all of the living room furniture floating in the middle of the room due to walkways and doorways, I think a sofa table with two lamps will better define this living room and give it a cozier, more welcoming vibe. Plus I prefer lamp light to overhead lighting in the evening, and there’s really no where else in this space to sneak in some task lighting outside of bringing in some lamps on a console table.
*I’m so glad I had floor outlets put in while building!
Console Table Options
I’m working with very specific measurements as our sofa is just a tad longer than most love seats. And I want something that feels both modern and classic.

- This burl wood option is such a great price, but it might be little too small.
- I love that this ivory lacquered linen console table is almost the same color as my sofa, so it would visually disappear keeping the space feeling really open and airy.
- This black marble is a stunner!!! Sleek, but classic, and plays well with all of the other black elements in the space.
- I love this lucite, glass and brass console table. But with both a lucite coffee table and side table (both second hand finds) already in the space, I worry that it might feel too matchy.
- The same goes for this lucite table as well, but gosh I love how chunky it is! This table is probably a bit too large for my space anyway. But I love it so much I’m trying to figure out where else I might be able to use it.
*The general rule of thumb for a console table is that it should be the same height or just a few inches shorter than the back of your sofa. And it should also ideally have a little room on the width, generally about 6″ of space on either end. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but it just typically kind of looks odd to have a sofa console table that’s taller or wider than your sofa.

I would LOVE this burl wood beauty! But alas it’s too tall.
Then there’s this iron and glass display console that feels really special, but I kind of have my heart set on something that feels more chic.

Do you have a favorite? I think I’m leaning toward the black marble!
I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time surfing the web for console tables. If you’re also in the market for a new console table, here are a few other great options under $400!
There are so many nice console tables out there but I wish my table had a back on it because, like you, I wanted to put lamps on the table. The lamp cords show and I just hate this and don’t know how to get around it. Any ideas of what you will do with the electrical cords if you get any of the styles you are showing?
