New Year New Room Refresh Challenge: Striped Grasscloth Wallpaper – Help Me Decide!

It’s week 2 of the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge, and I’m excited to show you all the grasscloth wallpaper samples that arrived from Spoonflower. I *think* I know which one I’m going to choose, but I’d love for you all to share your thoughts!

From left to right, do you like one, two, or three? When I ordered these samples, one, the triple stripe, was my favorite. Now after seeing them in the space, I’m actually loving two, the pinstripe. But my plan is to wait until I address the ceiling situation before making a decision on what I want to do with the walls.

The leak was fixed and the ceiling has been repaired, so now I just need to put the wallpaper back in place and decide on a paint color.

I mean, black is the obvious choice since the grasscloth is black, and it wouldn’t be much of a change.

black ceiling?

But since I have to paint over the grasscloth, I feel like going in a different design direction would be much more fun! And why not make lemonade out of lemons, right?! Painting the ceiling the same color blue as the kitchen island would be a great way to link the spaces. And I like how soft and bright the blue feels.

blue ceiling?

Are you team black or team blue? A decision like this could take me weeks to decide, but I’m giving myself just 24 hours to decide. Because it’s just paint! And if I change my mind, I can just paint over it again, right?! 😉

Follow along on Instagram to see what color I decide on! And I’ll be back with an update here next Tuesday, and I’ll be sure to let you know how painting this grasscloth wallpapered ceiling goes……hoping I don’t end up with a massive neck cramp!

Now go check out what all of the other participants are up to this week!

  • I like two. Depending how the paint takes over grasscloth i think i like blue as a coloR chOice. Black may look better over grasscloth, though. maybe a black that isn’t Too darK. The blue just feels suitable to your warm coastal climatE.

  • Since you asked for opinions….I think the wall paper depends on the ceiling choice. If you go with blue ceiling, I like #2. It’s fresh and more coastal. If you go with black, I like 3. Much more drama! Much more formal too. I do think it would be easier to paint over blue if you decide it’s not right Thank to have a doubly black ceiling,

  • It is brave of you to paint over wallpaper! I would be worried that the moisture from the paint would loosen the glue and that the extra Weight of the paint on the wallpaper might also be a problem. having to take down the wallpaper at some future date would be much harder with it painted. As for color, what about a much lighter shade of blue so it relates to the island rather than copying it? Or Perhaps a darker blue that again relates to the island so it is a more subtle nod to the island color? I Agree with others who suggest settling on the ceiling and then picking the wallpaper — they are all very nice.

  • It has actually had the opposite effect…so far at least. The paint has acted like a glue. And I imagine it would be an absolute beast to ever remove now after painting, but if I ever change my mind and no longer want this paper on the ceiling, my plan is to panel over it. This is the main reason I thought this was a good place to experiment and just see what happens!
