Hello friends! Once again I’m thrilled to be joining a great group of design bloggers in kicking off the new year with a room makeover! It has been such an honor to be included in the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge (dreamed up by Stephanie at Casa Watkins Living) for the past three years, and I’m beyond pumped to take on year four! More on this year’s project in a minute, first, let’s take a quick trip down project memory lane.
Past Challenges
In my first year participating in this challenge, I tackled the laundry room.

Year two was our entry foyer.

And last year, my third year, I tackled our main bedroom hallway.

This Year’s Project
This year I’m tackling the dining room! At first glance, it might already look “finished”, but I’ve always felt like this space could use a bit more personality. And unfortunately, as much as I absolutely LOVE the black grasscloth wallpaper on the ceiling, the ceiling was damaged because of a leak and they have to cut a hole in it to fix the problem. At first, I was so upset about it……

…but then I got to thinking about all the possibilities! And I whipped up some crappy Instagram Story slides to help me envision my design plans. Photoshop is great, but playing with a picture in Stories is just too quick and easy! Please tell me I’m not the only one that does this to unwind at night!
Welcome to My Design Brain 😉
So hear me out, I’m thinking if we can just peel back the paper before they cut into the ceiling, that maybe I can put the paper back in place and just paint over it…..because I hate to lose the texture of the grasscloth but now that the grasscloth is water stained in one spot, I’d either have to repaper the entire ceiling (since grasscloth is like fabric and dye lots vary) or ditch the paper all together. But I’m hoping by patching and painting over the paper I can avoid both of those options. Am I crazy?!
What if I paint over it with flat black paint and also paint the crown black, and because I’ve always felt like these walls needed something, I’m thinking of adding a pattern (stripes!) with this patterned grasscloth!

Or maybe I leave the crown white……and consider horizontal stripes?

Or I could ditch the black and go for the same blue I have on the kitchen island and in the pantry.

And to give the chandelier a little more presence in the space maybe white or black shades.

As you can see, I’m a little all over the place right now, but this is how my brain works. I’m pretty sure I’ve landed on the striped grasscloth I want for the walls, but I do have a few different samples coming in the mail!

They’ll be digging into my ceiling tomorrow…..so stay tuned to see what I end up doing over on Instagram, and I’ll be back with an update here on the blog next Tuesday!
Be sure to check out what all of the other participants are planning to tackle for this year’s New Year New Room Refresh Challenge!
