Grasscloth!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have already seen a preview of these grasscloth projects. This past week I grass-clothed (yes, it’s a verb) a hallway, a bathroom, the dining room ceiling, and our bedroom ceiling. More accurately, my wallpaper installer did. And I’m head over heels in grasscloth wallpaper love!!!

This paper is so gorgeous!

I used two different grasscloth wallpapers. This one (that is very affordable) that I used in the hallway has more texture, color, and a much larger weave. For our bedroom ceiling, I opted to use this one (a beauty from Scalamandre) with a tighter weave. It’s darker and has more black weaved in but still has some lighter tones. I love the texture and the way these two different grasscloths play with each other.

There was a casualty to this wallpaper installation. A few of the glass pieces on this chandelier broke, but thankfully I can order replacement pieces!

The paper on the ceiling really transformed the room! This ceiling was already special before, and now it’s even more so! The dark paper makes the chandelier and beams really shine. And I also love that the black makes the room feel larger but still cozy at the same time.

I’ve always loved a black ceiling, but black grasscloth is next level gorgeousness. The way the light reflects the texture is just so, so pretty! I also had this same paper added to the dining room. And can’t decide which application I like best.

In an open floor plan, it can be a struggle to create some visual separation. I love how the addition of the dark wallpaper on the ceiling makes this room feel like its own space. And because black recedes it also immediately made the room feel larger.

Last but not least, the office/guest room bathroom got grassclothed as well! In here I used the same paper as the hallway. And this texture in here is soooo good!

Grasscloth is a classic, in my opinion! And I love the darker tones so much. I can’t wait to finish styling these spaces!

  • I have always LOVED grasscloth. Yours look great. I have recently been thinking about using it above the wainscot in our master bedroom and then continue it into our master bath. The bath has both a large tub and an enclosed shower. The bath is large, with windows and good exhaust fan…so any steam is usually dispersed quickly. Would you be concerned about using grasscloth in there? I’ve looked at faux grasscloth vinyl wallcoverings, but nothing I’ve seen has the look of the real thing.

  • I just realized you do have a shower in the bath where you used grasscloth. Sorry, I didn’t see that before I sent my previous comment.

  • Beautiful! I love the depth and texture this grass cloth has added to your home. May I ask what your ceiling height is in the dining room? We live in an older home with lower ceilings so I’d love some context ?

  • Yes, there’s a small shower in here. I think so long as you have good ventilation it’ll be fine. This is a guest bathroom, so the shower won’t see a ton of use. And the fan in here works really well.

  • Gorgeous! I love it on the ceiling! Such a great statement- especially in the bedroom with the beams!!

  • Absolutely love grass cloth! It was the thing back in the late 70s and early 80s. I had it in halls and dining room. But the ceiling application is over the top in beauty, no pun intended. Also love the green painted office. Always loved darker painted total rooms. You have the most wonderful taste.

  • Love your grass cloth! What great ideas for the ceiling! Can you provide the brands of the grasscloth that you used in your hallway?
    ThNk you

  • Thanks so much Judy! I’ve always loved grasscloth! My parents had it in their home when I was growing up, so it feels nostalgic for me.

  • This is beautiful! I love seeing your posts as you step out of the box and “wave that freak flag”. 🙂 Did it take long for the installer? I have never installed wallpaper and am wondering if peel and stick is an option for ceiling. I have a tray ceiling and have been wanting to do something to it. This may be the trick. Also, I noticed the pattern doesn’t line up. Did you purposely want it to vary like that or is that how it looks once installed? I like it but was wondering if you asked for it to appear that way (alternating) or if it is installed that way.

  • Hi Michelle! Thanks! It took my installer a couple of days of solo work. And yes, grasscloth will have visible seams; it’s not meant to line up. I’ve never used peel n stick on a ceiling, but I imagine it would likely be a little easier than traditional wallpaper because you wouldn’t have to fight against gravity as you’re putting it up. But since I’ve not done it myself, I can’t really speak to that with any real authority.
