New Year New Room Challenge – Laundry Room Reveal!

Today is reveal day for the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge! And I’m so excited to share my finished laundry room with you all! I’m so thankful for the motivation that this challenge, organized by Stephanie at Casa Watkins Living, provided because my laundry room just might be my favorite room in our new house now. Welcome to the laundry room at our seventh house!

Laundry Room Makeover

She’s moody and bold, and I’m 100% here for it!

The design of this space was inspired by this gorgeous William Morris wallpaper by Peacoquette from Spoonflower, and this Leopard on a Leash print I fell in love at first sight with on Etsy.

With all the great natural light that pours into the space through the french doors, I decided to go dark and moody with my paint color selection. And I decided to paint both the chair rail and the crown molding the same black as the walls (Sherwin Williams Hitching Post Black) to create a smoother flow with the wallpaper. But I left the base and the door trim white (Charleston White) to give the washer and dryer something to relate to in the space. I really love the contrast of the black and white molding paired with the checkered floors!

This space is not only filled with stylish details that I love, but it is also so much more functional now thanks to the addition of a simple DIY shelf and a clothing rod for drying things.

The Details

When we were in the planning stages for our new house build I opted to skip laundry room cabinets, and I’m still really happy with that decision. Not having the bulk and visual weight of cabinets above the machines helps to make this small space feel more spacious. Plus, all I really need for this space to function well is a shelf for my laundry essentials as there is a linen closet right outside the laundry room door. So I built a floating shelf which also disguises the washing machine connections, and I painted it the same color as the walls so it would just sort of disappear.

I’ll be sharing all the DIY details on how I built this floating shelf here on the blog tomorrow!

This vintage glass bottle holds bleach, and the thrifted glass decanter holds our laundry soap. The little brass jar holds essential oils, and that small glass jar holds push pins for the memo board. I love it when function and form come together so beautifully!

Did you catch that other little detail up above? I couldn’t help myself. I used a little gold rub ‘n buff and gave the Q’s on my Speed Queens a glam makeover. Call me crazy, but little details like that make me so happy!

The lucite rod I recycled from my office at our last house (our sixth house). It’s a curtain rod, but it works perfectly as a clothing rod for drying things!

I love my top-loading washing machine, but in this small laundry room it doesn’t really allow for much folding space. So I brought in this vintage stereo cabinet (that belonged to my husband’s grandparents) to give me a little “countertop”. And it’s the perfect size!

This little lamp makes a great night light. Covering the shade with this Napoleonic bee fabric gave it a fun, custom look.

This vintage chair that I spray painted gold a million years ago also makes for a great stacking spot. (Long time readers, do you remember this chair from the entry foyer at our fifth house?! This was one of my very first blog projects. Ha!)

This memo board I made with matching velvet fabric from Spoonflower gives me a place to display special family photos and pin invites and other important notes. And I love that it brings this gorgeous William Morris pattern around the room in such a fun and unexpected way!

Last but definitely not least, these gorgeous black and brass light fixtures from Sazerac Stitches are truly the cherry on top! They are absolutely stunning, and I can’t love them more!

I’m so grateful to have a laundry space that has so much personality! This room *almost* makes me look forward to doing my least favorite household chore. 😉

  • Wow! So incredible and totally dramatic! What a fun space to do your laundry in – must make it so much more fun to deal with the dreaded chore. I love how it feels like a real room and not just a utility space.

  • This is fabulous!! I started following you because of your bold design choices. The eclectic mix is such a departure from the feeds that start to look so cookie cutter now. You are inspiring people to use color, texture and print! Thank you!

  • It’s beautiful! FYI: bleach is sold in opaque bottles because it breaks down in light so you may want to rethink the glass decanter or put it in the wood cabinet to protect it.

  • Hi Carmel,

I use Feedly to read all blogs. Do you know that your new posts no longer appear in Feedly?
The last post that appears there is “Disney World: July 4th Summer Vacation Trip Report” from 6 months ago.

  • Yes, unfortunately there’s nothing I can do about it on my end. It has something to do with my switch to https. Sorry for the inconvenience. You can always subscribe to my emails. I share all blog posts as well as sneak peeks of other projects and stylish finds in those emails.
