New Year New Room Challenge – Week 4 – DIY Memo Board

Week 4 of the New Year New Room Challenge is here, which means I’ve got just one week left to wrap up this project! Thankfully, all that is left for me to do at this point is style and photograph. I can’t wait to share my laundry room with you all next Tuesday, February 4th! Today I’m sharing this super easy memo board project I did for the space.

DIY Memo board

The wall behind the door of my laundry room is one you haven’t seen yet, and it’s where our electrical panels are located. Necessary but ugly, I wanted to disguise them; but I also wanted to make sure they’d be easily accessible. So I decided to use a large scale cork board (36 x 36 inches found at Hobby Lobby) which would be lightweight enough to easily take down when needed and would also give me a functional place to pin things like photos, invitations and other important notes/papers.

As you’ll see next week, I opted to leave the wall behind the door of my laundry room devoid of wallpaper, and instead I used velvet printed with the same pattern and scale of the wallpaper to cover this memo board. That way the pattern would carry all the way around the room in more of an unexpected way. You’ll see what I’m talking about next week. For now, let me walk you through this super simple project in case you want to create one for yourself!

The DIY Details

I started by painting the frame black. Then once dry, I measured and cut the fabric to fit.

This Spoonflower velvet has a nice weight to it, so I didn’t feel like I needed to add a layer between the fabric and the cork board. I simply glued the fabric directly to the board making sure to smooth out the fabric to keep it tight to the board.

Then I added some velvet ribbon around the edges to cover the raw hem.

Last but not least, to dress up the frame I used upholstery nails (The Home Depot). I used a mini glue stick as a spacer which made spacing them a breeze, and I love this little detail.

This memo board was done in less than an hour start to finish! I used command strips to hang it, and it covers the electrical panels in my laundry room so stylishly. I can’t wait to show you how it looks in the room next week!
