There are basically two groups of women when it comes to essential oils. Those that are hardcore believers and users. And those that think essential oils are just a trend or another “healthy lifestyle” gimmick. And believe me if you’re in the latter group, I was too for many years. But back in 2014 I had a change of heart. Now I’m a full on – I’ve got an oil for that – essential oil hippie! Insert the peace sign emoji. 😉
But seriously, I use essential oils for pretty much all the things everyday of my life.
I haven’t really shared much about essential oils and how I use them here on the blog in quite awhile, but I do occasionally mention them on Instagram, specifically in my stories. And every time I do I get tons of messages with questions about them. So I figured it was a good idea to share an updated blog post about which ones I love and use regularly and why out of all the essential oil brands on the market I chose Young Living (that’s a question I get a lot!).
Honestly, I have quite the arsenal. But today I’m going to focus on my daily squad. The regulars in my life that are in constant rotation. Sound good? Here we go!
Natural Fragrance
Hands down my favorite essential oil of them all is JOY. This little pink bottle is a life changer! This oil is actually a blend of Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Jasmine, Palmarosa, and Rose essential oil. Joy oil has a fresh, floral aroma with notes of citrus from the essential oils of Bergamot, Lemon, and Tangerine. Joy essential oil blend is perfect for diffusing in your home! It smells absolutely amazing!
I love these plug-in diffusers you can find at Whole Foods or on Amazon. They’re small and unobtrusive. While I love a traditional diffuser in the bedroom, I like that these plug-ins keep my essential oil use incognito. People who come to my home don’t need to find out what an essential oil hippie I am right off the bat, ya know? 😉 A few drops of Joy and my home smells so inviting! I love this oil so much I also diffuse it in my car using one of these.
Joy is also what I love to use as perfume. I am literally doused in JOY at all times! Since it doesn’t come in a roll-on, I just buy these easy-to-fill roller bottles.
Essential oils are a great alternative to traditional perfumes which are often loaded with toxic chemicals. And in addition to making you smell good they’re also delivering essential oil benefits, so using them feels like a win-win to me. My other most used essential oil blend for perfume is Stress Away. It’s the perfect oil blend for a busy mom with a light vanilla scent that is not too overpowering. The name of this oil blend just says it all!
For the Home
I’ve been using Young Living’s Thieves line of cleaning products since 2014, and I’ve yet to find anything better in the toxic-free household cleaners industry. And y’all, I’ve tried almost every brand out there. What I love most about using Thieves is that the products get delivered directly to my door, so there’s no wasting time shopping for cleaners and reading ingredient labels at the store. Grocery store shopping is my least favorite errand, so reducing what I need to pick up seriously makes my life so much easier! Plus, I trust Young Living. Their products aren’t a marketing ploy. There’s no smoke in mirrors happening here.
The Thieves cleaning products also smell amazing! I use the dish soap, dishwasher detergent, household cleaner (which is a concentrate that can be used in kitchens, bathrooms and even on floors), and the laundry detergent.
When washing sheets and towels I love to add in a few drops of Lavender essential oil. Nothing will make you sleep better than lavender scented sheets!
Lavender is a workhorse oil that is great to have on hand for all sorts of things from burns to bug bites.
Beauty Routine
Here’s a little tip for you, Cedarwood and Lavender make great additions to your mascara. *(I love W3ll People mascara – toxic free and awesome!) This essential oil combo naturally boosts lash growth! All you need is one drop of each. And the bonus, as if great lashes weren’t enough, is that this will also help to extend the life of your mascara.
Frankincense oil is what I believe to be the gold standard in age defying skincare. 😉 I mix 4 to 5 drops with my Beautycounter Facial Oil every. single. night. I would mix in Ylang Ylang as well, but there’s no need since my Beautycounter Oil already has it in there. This combo is a one two punch for youthful, well nourished skin! There’s a reason the wise men brought Jesus some Frankincense. 😉 This oil is a miracle worker!
Bedtime Routine
Who doesn’t love a good night’s sleep? I’ve already mentioned that I wash my linens with Lavender essential oil which is wonderful for a restful night of sleep, but I also like to apply the Tranquil blend to my temples, behind my neck and on my wrists.
I actually keep this roll-on on my night stand on a little tray. So if I happen to awake in the middle of the night, which rarely ever happens, I can reapply. This blend of oils smells so soothing. And applying it feels like a nice little ritual to end the day.
Deep Relief is one I use occasionally when I’ve tired my muscles in Pilates or Barre class. Or for the occasional crick in the neck.
Daily Oils
In addition to all of the oils I’ve already mentioned, I also use lemon essential oil on a daily basis in my drinking water. Peppermint is one I always have on hand as it soothes headaches and provides relief to the airways during cold and allergy seasons.
Since 2014 when I began my essential oil journey my home medicine cabinet has changed quite a bit. I reach for oils first and rarely need anything else.
How Do You Know Which Oils to Use?
I often feel like an apothecary for my family and friends. Or at least what I imagine it was like to be an apothecary. 😉 They are constantly texting or calling to ask me for advice on which oils to use for different things. And truth be told, as much as I appreciate their trust and confidence, my wealth of essential oil knowledge comes from an app. Ha! But really, this app is $6.99 and it’s the best essential oil guide I’ve ever used.
It’s very easy to use! You can look up specific ailments or needs and find exactly which oils to use. Or you can search oils and blends to find out more about them and how they effect the body.
Why Young Living?
Of all the essential oil brands out there, I chose Young Living for the seed to seal promise. I like that they have a hand in every step of the process from growing the plants to distilling. Bottom line, I trust the quality of these oils. There are a lot of cheap oil brands on the market today that are just not delivering what they’re marketing. But Young Living is real deal.
For me, becoming a wholesale member was a no-brainer. But you don’t have to become a member to buy Young Living’s products. Although when you do, you receive a 24% discount on all Young Living products! And there are no monthly minimums, so it seems almost silly not to become a member if you’re interested in trying more than just one product.
When you become a member you also have access to buy some amazing kits that bundle the products in the most affordable way! For $160 you could become a member and snag one of these amazing sets!
The Premium Starter Kit comes with many of my everyday oils as well as a beautiful diffuser! This is a great kit for anyone who is looking to get started with essential oils.
And if you’ve been on the hunt for toxic-free cleaning supplies and have yet to find something that really works, this Thieves set is amazing! The Thieves Household Cleaner is a concentrate. One bottle is basically equal to about 15 bottles of cleaner. And in this set you get 2 of them! So you basically would not need to buy any countertop sprays, bathroom cleaners or floor cleaners for over a year with this set!
But if you’re not ready to totally dive in and would rather just test the essential oil water first, you can still become a member for as little as $45 and snag the basic starter kit which comes with my favorite Stress Away blend and a bunch of samples, including a sample of the Thieves Household Cleaner.
If you’re interested, you can sign up as a member or customer by clicking here. Let me know if you have any questions! I hope this post was helpful and touched on a lot of the main things you’ve been curious about regarding essential oils!

I like young Living oils because I am not allergic to them. I tried a cheap brand once and we highly allergic to it so I stick with the brand I know I can trust.
