Woohoo! It’s week one of the Fall One Room Challenge, and I’m so excited to finally be able to share what space – or more accurately spaces – I’ll be tackling over the next 8 weeks! This is my very first ORC playing along as a featured designer, so I’m not going to lie, I’m a little nervous. But I’m also beyond excited and absolutely thrilled to bring my vision for our home library and attached porch to life!

What is the One Room Challenge?!
The ORC is an online interior design event, organized by Linda Weinstein, where 20 Featured Designers and hundreds of other Guest Participants transform a room of our choice in just 8 weeks. With Better Homes & Gardens as the media sponsor, this biannual challenge is always brimming with design inspiration. Not only does this event inspire and motivate us, but it also creates a supportive creative community. I’m always blown away by the spaces created each season, so it’s an absolute honor to be counted as a Featured Designer this fall!
Home Library/Media Room Before

Some of you may be looking at this space thinking, “This doesn’t exactly look like a before picture.” And I get that. I’m obviously not starting from scratch in our home library. (But this isn’t the only space I’ll be tackling! Keep reading……)
I’ve definitely made some design moves in here over the past two years that I don’t plan on changing, such as bringing in this gorgeous vintage rug I scored at an estate sale last year and purchasing this blue velvet sofa from Restoration Hardware.
While the paint color that I love will also not be changing (Hunley by Duron for Sherwin Williams), this room has never been completely “finished”. There are quite a few major design details still missing in this space that I’ve been wanting to bring to life for quite a while. And I think even with the start this room already has, these details are going to bring some major visual impact.
But also, there’s a reason you’ve only ever seen one side of this room. The other side is even more of a work in progress……

….with lots of empty shelves that still need to be filled……

…..and this dry bar area that has been unfinished since we moved in back in October of 2019.

I have some really fun plans for this little dry bar that I can’t wait to share with you!

But as I’ve already mentioned, this isn’t the only space I’ll be tackling this fall. And the attached porch to our library is a blank slate.
Porch Before
Outside these sliding glass doors……

is a porch where I’d like to create a lounge-y, reading patio situation.

Being on the second story of an elevated home, this porch has a really nice backyard view. But right now it’s sadly underused.

But I have big plans to remedy that and to make this porch feel more like an extension of our library.

Right now, these two spaces feel really disjointed, so I plan to bring in some design elements that will create some visual flow.

Backstory
Here are a couple of building progress pictures from over two years ago.
I’ve always wanted a home library! Many of you know how much I love to read. And I also enjoy collecting books, both old and new. However, my husband has always wanted a theater room as he loves watching movies. So when we were building, we combined our visions and decided on a library media room. I designed the bookshelves to wrap around the room with the TV in the center. Best of both worlds. Compromise. It’s what makes a marriage work. 😉

I wanted symmetry and simplicity. And I knew from the start, I wanted a rich, moody blue.

And because the view from the back of the house is so serene, we decided to make this room a walk-out space and added a small porch.

The photo below was taken just a couple of days ago, and it has me feeling so excited to get started on this library/media room and porch transformation! I’m looking forward to making this porch a space my whole family will enjoy, and I can’t wait to share my design plans for this porch with you all next week!

And since our library/media room is the first room you see at the top of the stairs, if time allows, you might even see some changes made in this hallway!

I’ll be sharing behind-the-scenes looks at selections and projects over on Instagram, so follow along there for updates! Next Wednesday, I’ll be sharing my design plans for both spaces here on the blog!
Now be sure to check out what all of the other Featured Designers will be up to during this season of the One Room Challenge!
