One Room Challenge Fall 2021: Week Six – Dry Bar – Help Me Choose a Stain

Well, friends, this week I hit a few speed bumps, so I didn’t get as much done over the weekend as I had hoped. And Monday, I accidentally broke the ceiling light fixture 10 minutes after my electrician finished installing. Soooooo….things are really heating up over here 😉 …and I’m starting to feel the pressure of this impending One Room Challenge deadline! I can’t believe it’s already week six! Just two weeks to go! Time is really starting to fly, and I still have so much to do. There are two DIY projects I’m hoping to finish this week. One is a tile coffee table that I’ve been sharing bits of on Instagram Stories, and the second is finishing up the countertop and floating shelves in the dry bar area.

To joy your memory, here’s how the dry bar in our library/media room looked six weeks ago.

And now, after this gorgeous antique mirror tile, pendant light, and ceiling wallpaper was added, I’m trying to decide if I want to stain the countertop and shelves (that I still need to build) a light, natural color, or something a bit darker.

I could either match the hardwood floors, or I could go with a darker stain that would compliment a lot of the furniture in the space. The lighter, natural wood look might lend itself to more of a coastal vibe whereas a darker, maybe chestnut, stain would feel a little more traditional. What are your thoughts? I’m a little torn. And I’m running out of time, so I need to make a decision!

Speaking of the furniture in the space, let’s talk about this incredible vintage find! I’ve been on the hunt for a stand-alone rolling library ladder for this space since way back when we were still in the building process of our home. And I finally found the piece of my dreams on FB Marketplace!

The leather handrails with brass nailhead trim are literally everything! I’m so in love with this piece! A traditional rolling, leaning library ladder would be visually stunning in this space, but functionality-wise it just wouldn’t be a good fit. And function really matters to me. With the space doubling as a media room, I wanted a stand-alone piece that I could use without having to rearrange the furniture layout. And after years of searching, I finally found the perfect piece! For those of you who shop second-hand, you know what a thrill it is when you find that special item!

It’s LOVE! 🙂

  • Looking great! I’m finding the red tone of the ladder (which is awesome) kind of disconnected from the rest of your color PALETTE – i wonder if you can tie that warm red tone into the Bar to make it complement the space?

  • i’d go with the darker stain. The antique mirror tiles just don’t harmonize with a coastal or casual look, And the black lower cabinets will provide enough contrast even with a chestnut countertop.
