New Year New Room Refresh Challenge: Moody, Masculine Bathroom Ideas

Happy New Year, friends! Once again, I’m kicking off the year by joining a group of my fellow design creatives in taking on The New Year New Room Refresh Challenge. This is my fifth year participating in this challenge that was dreamed up by Stephanie at Casa Watkins Living, and it’s truly something I’ve come to look forward to doing every January. This year, I’ll be bringing you all along as I give my son’s bathroom a moody, masculine vibe. Every Tuesday, I’ll be sharing an update here on Our Fifth House, and the goal is to have a “finished” space by the end of the month. (But is any room ever really finished? 😉 I hope not. I mean, where’s the fun in that?!)

I find this challenge to be so motivating! In the past few years, I’ve tackled our laundry room,

and dining room.

This year, I’m planning to give my son’s bathroom a little makeover. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’ve already tackled a few projects in this space. It’s a fairly large bathroom that Jack & Jill’s to the library. A couple of months ago, I had some fun with painter’s tape and added a brown stripe to this small vanity space.

I just love the impact this punch of pattern made in the space!

And, a couple of weeks ago, I painted the shower and commode room in a solid brown (Madeira Wine from the Duron Historic Collection for Sherwin Williams) and swapped out the white commode seat for black.

I also swapped out the ceiling light in the other vanity area a few months ago after I thrifted this cane pendant! (These are old pictures from before I painted the shower space brown.)

I’m so in LOVE with this cane pendant, and the fact that I thrifted it makes me love it even more!

But other than swapping out the light, I haven’t done much with the larger vanity space that connects to my son’s bedroom. And I have some ideas swirling around in my head!

I’m considering adding some molding to the walls similar to this bathroom from Grit and Polish, but I would paint it black instead of staining.

I also like the idea of using beadboard. I can’t decide which I prefer. Thoughts?

No matter what kind of wainscotting I go with, I plan to give this bathroom a moody, masculine vibe with classic details. These are the bathroom spaces that are inspiring me right now! As you can see, I’m in my black and brown era. 😉 I love that this combo is neutral yet anything but boring. And dark colors in bathrooms that are filled with lots of natural light make me happy.

I’ll be sharing the mood board I created for this bathroom next week!

But be sure to check out what spaces everyone else is planning to tackle this month by clicking below, and feel free to join us! Is there a space in your home you’d like to refresh this year?
