Summer Snapshots Around the House

Hello friends! Today I’m joining a group of my fellow color-loving design bloggers in a summer home tour. Welcome to the “It’s A Colorful Life: Snapshots of Summer” virtual house tour, organized by Jewel from Jeweled Interiors and Jennifer from Dimples and Tangles!

If you’re popping over Brenda’s, at BD Interior Design, welcome! I’m Carmel, and I’m thrilled you’re here. For the new people here, my blog name is Our Fifth House, but this is actually our seventh house. We’ve moved twice since I started this blog. It’s confusing, I know. 😉 We built our current home, house number 7, and moved in last October, and I’m still trying to figure out what to do about the blog name. Ha! But while I sit with indecision over the name of this blog, I’ve been happily moving right along with decorating and making our new house feel like home. There’s still a lot to be done, but little by little my vision is starting to come to life! And while this summer has felt so very strange, I’ve been trying to savor my time at home with my two teenagers that are inching closer and closer to leaving our nest someday.

I recently finished building a porch swing for our front porch! And as much as I love my teenagers and husband, I really have enjoyed my alone time out here. 😉

Pantry

It may be strange to start a home tour in a walk-in pantry, but this little room has been my happy place since we moved in……well, actually since well before that…..I’ve dreamed of having a pantry like this for years!

Kitchen

I love fresh flowers year round but especially so in the summer. In the kitchen I love creating little bouquets of fresh clippings from the yard and herbs from my container garden.

The dining room is still a work in progress…….not quite ready for its close-up. 😉 But you can take a full kitchen tour and get all the details and sources in this post here.

vintage dresser

Hard to tell in a picture but these are cowhide lampshades, and I love them! They add so much great texture to this vignette. And these lamps are so special too! There’s a bulb inside the base, so the base of the lamp illuminates. It makes for the most gorgeous mood lighting in the evenings.

Living Room

I know open concepts aren’t for everyone, but I LOVE ours! Even with all the family togetherness we’ve had during this pandemic, I haven’t changed my mind. 😉 I just really, really love being able to load the dishwasher and watch Outlander at the same time. 🙂

Outside these sliding glass doors is our screen porch, which is next on my decorating hit list!

Screen Porch

Here’s how she’s looking right now. The porch ceiling is the same color as our kitchen island and pantry. I love using color to tie spaces together!

You can check out my decorating plans for the screen porch here.

While new visitors may think I only use color in micro-doses, regulars here know that’s only true for my main living areas. I’ve gone full throttle with color in other spaces! Be sure to check out the green office/guest room and my black, white and red laundry room before you go!

  • Your home is sooooo beautiful! That pantry is serious goals too. Thank you so much for the awesome tour.

  • Hi, Carmel. Id love a post about living with both a kitchen and walk-in pantry such as yours. Beyond food storage, how do you use the pantry? Obviously it keeps your kitchen tidier, but what functions do you do in the pantry (sink and counters are super nice additions but you don’t see them too often in a pantry!) and what functions do you do in the kitchen? Thanks!

  • Hi Pinny. That’s a great post topic idea! I will definitely work on putting something together. We use our walk-in pantry a ton because it’s where all of our small appliances are – microwave, coffee maker, toaster – they’er all housed in the pantry. This is also why I wanted a countertop in the pantry. I wanted the space to function for more than just storage. Having a counter in there means you can make a sandwich/pack a lunchbox, pour your cereal, do instant oatmeal, etc within the pantry. Which then frees up the kitchen space so that we’re not all on top of each other working in here. Sunday mornings….I can be making pancakes and my husband can be making a pot of coffee and we never cross paths. I really tried to think about function first and then form.

  • Carmel, I don’t think I would ever, ever want to leave your front porch! Although every other space in your house is just as fabulous! So glad you joined us on the tour!

  • Thanks so much Jamala! I do enjoy reading out here and just sitting and enjoying a cup of coffee or glass of wine. 🙂
